KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

sfc /scannow

DISM /online /get-packages /format:table | findstr KB2919355

DISM /online /remove-dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.3.1

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

DISM /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup /resetbase

cleanmgr.exe

@echo off

Echo Cleanup complete

pause

Yes. I have been trying to update this since more than a day. I tried, the update troubleshooter, DISM and also the standalone installer. But Nada. The error remains.

    the emax,

By chance do you have a restore point prior to the 8th?

If so, this should be your starting point.

Ensure you have kb2919442 in history

if you don't start by installing it.  If "355" has failed, you should run the two commands - Fail or not

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>DISM /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14

    and

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

    Following this

Run the windows update troubleshooter, yes when prompted to run as admin

    Close window

Run standalone "355" installer (download a fresh copy to be safe)

On my systems where the update was run and failed, the common steps were DISM removal and restore (even if restore health failed). Then windows update troubleshooter.  No restarts were needed.  I also temporarily disabled AVG until restart on 3 of the machines.  If you are using windows defender, no action should be needed.

These were all different machine from different manufacturers.  Some were 8 upgrades, others 8.1 out of the box.  Some with Media Center, some not.  My earliest attempts did include sfc /scannow but only because I believed something was wrong with file system integrity.  It turns out there wasn't and I believe the same for you if you got a clean report.

So if the update was not attempted and failed.  Windows update troubleshooter and running the stand alone installer has worked for me.  2 simple steps.

Otherwise I did have to remove the package.  On at least 3 of the machines only the first DISM command completed successfully, and the troubleshooter only partially fixed what it reportedly found, but the update still applied, and updated correctly on restart.  Merely by my performing the sequence of steps

In all cases, (when successful) the systems restarted at 30% (after initial restart) when the machines display "Working on updates".  If yours hanging at 10 or 16% the update will fail.  I would try a few more times.  Good luck!!

    Hi Shadowsports,

    thx for the help.

    I do have kb2919442  installed, on 4/3.

When I run windows update troubleshooter: it find the issue with : "Problems with installing recent Updates" - Not fixed is a result.

I did download fresh copy of 355 this morning, dated 4/16

the DISM restore health gives me this ..

    ****

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool

    Version: 6.3.9600.16384

    Image Version: 6.3.9600.16384

    [==========================100.0%==========================]

The restore operation failed. Either the repair source was not found or the component store cannot be repaired.

    Error: 0x800f081f

DISM failed. No operation was performed.

For more information, review the log file.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log
