KB2919355 (Windows 8.1 Update) Fails (800f0092 and 80073712) on Windows 8.1 Pro w Media Center

It is certain that all of us here share/d a common problem, but each environment was different enough to keep a single solution from working in every case.  After 3 days and countless attempts, I was fortunate that Marco's steps worked and allowed me to further refine them to a shorter solution that has taken care of the 8 machines I own and am immediately responsible for.  Each machine was unique.  Some installed as 8, upgraded to 8.1. The SP2's were all 8.1.  HP, Lenovo.  A few had the media add-on others did not.  Vastly different software environments.  At one point or another, I saw all of the errors and experienced all of the behaviors, each of us will remember as our own.  My favorite was getting to 99%, then uh-oh reverting.  That got old quick.

it's important to remember that solutions to these types of problems do not always come quickly or easily.  Development is a tedious process and it is not possible to test a release with every conceivable environment.  Even MS has limits, but this is not typical for them.  Easy for me to say now that I am passed this issue.  For those still not updated, I don't expect you to feel any better.  I hope that positive news will come in the following days.

Well now it just got stupider still.  Referring to my previous post, I chased down the details of this new update component KB295997 on the MS support site, and it says that it's there to address problems for customers that use WSUS 3.2 to manage downloads.  It goes on further to say that if you don't have this situation, then to skip it.

Thank you, MS - it would be nice if you included that little tidbit in the KB2919355 installation instructions.

Now, I wonder for all user who don't have this issue and elect not to install KB295997, will WU continue to report back that the update isn't finished and there's a 2.8MB download yet to install?  Has anyone with a successful update seen this behavior?  If so, if people then try to install it (out of order, now) in a previously-successful update, will it break the update?

I was able to install KB2919355 STANDALONE using following steps, however windows update itself still thinks I need to install to KB2919355 but it shows update being 196.9 MB download and I did flush windows update cache after install. Any ideas?

YES I can answer that -- but it just weirder.  (Apologies in advance for the long post -- this is important, I think.)

First off, I learned the hard way (and with the help of Sandra) that the standalone update consists of several discreet update files, as people have been describing here.  But the WU online update appears to have just the one file (KB2919355) but in actuality contains them all.  So if you just installed the first of the standalone update components, WU still sees it as an incomplete KB2919355 update since the other components have yet to be installed.

**But this is where it gets weird** --- YESTERDAY MICROSOFT UPDATED ITS KB2919355 UPDATE!!

I have an old (4/8/14) printout of the MS standalone web page, and it says:

"Version: 2919355    Date Published:  4/7/2014"

But today it says:

"Version: 2919355    Date Published:  4/16/2014"

The previous version listed the following five files included in the update:

Windows8.1-KB2919355-x64.msu   690.8 MB

Windows8.1-KB2932046-x64.msu    48.0 MB

Windows8.1-KB2934018-x64.msu   126.4 MB

Windows8.1-KB2937592-x64.msu       303 KB

Windows8.1-KB2938439-x64.msu    19.6 MB

Now when you go to the MS site, it lists a new, sixth file:

Windows8.1-KB2959977-x64.msu     2.8 MB

WTF, MS?  Thousands of customers have been wasting untold hours installing this mandatory update, and even for those with successful updates, you have just changed what the mandatory update is -- without any notice whatsoever to your customers!

What's worse, this added file won't do a single thing to help anyone with problems installing KB2919355, since this new file must be installed after KB2919355, which is where everyone is failing.

What's worse still, is that MS states that the new added file must be installed in a particular order, prior to KB2937592, KB2938439, and KB2934018.  WTF??  Now that means that every single user who managed so far to successfully install their update, may have a newly incomplete and failed update -- since if they try to install this new component, it will be installed out of the sequence that MS says must be followed.  And so now, who knows what will explode?

Anyway, scnrfrq, in response to your original question about the 196.9 MB download that WU says you must still install after installing KB2919355:  if you add the sizes of all the updates listed above after KB2919355 (including the new one just added) you come up with 197.1 MB... close enough with round-off, I think, to explain WU's message.  (or maybe you're using 32-bit downloads, which are smaller?)
