I am running Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center. It is a 64-bit edition.

I downloaded the Windows 8.1 Update from MSDN. Installed it on two machines with no problems.

Update is a series of 6 updates packed in a single zip file. Unzipped the files. Went to install the first recommended update (KB2919442). Dialog box indicated it was already installed.

Went to install the second update (KB2919355). It ran through the dialogs and said installation completed. It indicated that a reboot was necessary. Rebooted. It began to install the update after the reboot. Got about 60% of the way through, then said it couldn't complete. Error message 800F0092.

Had successfully installed on two other machines, one a VM and one a Samsung tablet. Only difference is this computer is 1) Media Center, and 2) was running WebRoot antimalware agent.

Uninstalled WebRoot.

Retried the install. Got about 98% through the dialog (green progress bar almost at 100%), went it stopped and the dialog said Update Failed.

Error message in the update history is now 80073712.

Please note that's 64bit only

To make that work on 32bit do:

Also note AMD does not mean this only works on AMD chipsets.  AMD invented the 64bit platform, so even if you are running 64bit intel, that amd64 notation is still valid.

    To MW and anyone else that I've recently opened a case for.  I thank you for being patient and ask that you be patient a little longer.  It's because you are the "problem children" that I need you to be patient.  Because the 'canned' list of things to try to fix this isn't working I really need Microsoft to look at you and see what's up with your box.  We have gone through what I call phase 1 - the early bodies.  And as a result there's now a canned 'try this' that is working for quite a few people.  But now we are in phase 2 - those folks that are harder to fix.  So thank you for being patient and hang in there just a little bit longer.

    That's fine, as long as update as installed. I'm positive Microsoft is working on a hotfix, since only 1 out of mine 3 machines actually installed KB2919355 automatically without a hitch. KB2919355 did show up on automated windows update even though it shows as installed in update history, so I hide the update to keep from repopulating on the update list on both machines I had to force the update on. I'm sure microsoft will address this with a patch or hotfix. Don't worry the deadline for KB2919355 to be installed is 13 MAY 14, so M$ as a month to fix this.

    Success - finally! Here's what worked for me on my Acer Aspire V5, with the help of Navin (6 hours worth) from MS Support. Nothing else worked until I followed these steps:

    1. Do a system restore back to a point before you tried to install the update.
    2. Uninstall Malwarebytes if present.

    <SNIP>

    Did you uninstall MalwareBytes Anti-Malware Pro (MBAM Pro), MBAM Free, MalwareBytes Anti-Exploit (MBAE) Beta v0.10.0.1000 or...?

    It was Malwarebytes Free. I only did on demand scanning with it - it wasn't running all the time. MS support said to uninstall it anyway.
