Very slow data transfer - One Drive

I have a particular problem for which I have not found a solution.

I purchased 1 TB of One drive storage. The data transfer from my PCs and android devices is very slow to the point where it is becoming unusable. Folders are uploading from my PC to One Drive but in many cases not their data. When I open the folders in Outlook.com or on another device or PC, I often receive a message 'Folders are empty', or conversely, on another PC the folders simply have no contents.

I am trying to ascertain the cause but it is proving difficult. Below is a possible cause of issue:

I am based in Australia. When I opened my hotmail account some years ago in Australia, for some reason I was given a  .uk hotmail address. Whilst I used the service primarily for email it was not a problem. However, I am wondering now if OneDrive is backing up my data to a UK server rather than one in Australia and that is causing the problem. I have thought of closing my hotmail/outlook.com account and opening a new one but I would prefer not to do that. I would like to retain my entitlements through my current account. When I purchased the 1 TB storage it was with a license for Office 2013 (2 PCs) and for one portable device. I want to retain the office license. I have an android tablet and when MS releases Office for Android, I would like to use the remaining license on it.

    Is this the consumer OneDrive or OneDrive For Business (part of Office 365)? I assume it's ODFB because the other FREE  OD works quite well, but we have to ask because of Msft's assinine use of the same name for very different products.

    I entirely agree with HA. One of the reasons I moved to office 365 was because of the "free" storage.

    I have set things up to sync my pictures - but so far in 4 days it has uploaded all the folders - most of which are empty, and the "free" picture files that were in the root folder of "Pictures" .

    I am at a loss to understand how the process can virtually block my internet connection when it is hardly doing anything at all!

    A quick count shows that it has uploaded about 500 files in 4 days, and I see that there are 12,989 files to go - so if my maths is correct that means another 104 days - and I have not even started on my documents!

    As a service, this is TOTALLY TOTALLY useless.

    Please see my recent post for a possible solution to poor performance with OneDrive.

    I tried Google Drive but:

    1. Google Drive uploaded at the same speed as OneDrive, the speed my ISP advertises. This is after the fix linked to above.
    2. Google Drive has it's own problems. For example it simply stopped uploading my Quicken data file, leaving the little spinning arrows spinning but network activity had stopped. OTHER apps were working fine, both up and down. After restarting Google Drive it said sync complete but the file was NOT visible at the web page.

    So I gave up on Google Drive.

    I agree OneDrive needs some work. I don't like having to stop/restart it occasionally when it loses track of what it is doing but it is still useful to me even in it's current state. I miss the old OneDrive's "smart files" aka "placeholders" but can live without that capability.

    See my other post in this thread  for an easy way to reset OneDrive when it gets lost or hung up.

    The root issue is that ODFB is nothing more than a Sharepoint library, and SP was not engineered for cloud use. Google and Dropbox developed their solutions for the cloud, Msft is just milking all they can out of the aging server technology SP is built on.  Until they build a completely new cloud based platform, they will be forever bandaiding the current offering and making all of us unfortunate enough to be stuck with SP suffer as a result.

    The only other thing I'd add is that a lot of people think of syncing as a migration tool - which it isn't. Only sync what you really need access to offline. Everything else, I'm afraid you'll have to drag and drop.

    OneDrive the Terrible is absurdly slow and I have the solution!! Leave OneDrive and use Google Drive or Dropbox. They both work great! OneDrive is the laughing-stock of the Cloud community no matter how much the company invests in Cloud technology. Somehow the company has found a way to make money by offering a sub-par product. It's a sham! You've been hoodwinked!! OneDrive the terrible.
