Original Title: Windows 8.1 Update 1 Failing to Install

I've been trying to get the Windows 8.1 Update 1 to install for a couple hours now.  I installed a series of files using windows update earlier in the day.  Later I tried installing the update file (KB2919355) that popped up in the Windows Update window.  The downloading process look over 45 minutes for a 800 MB file even thought I have an internet connection over 20 MB/s.  After that it spent 20 minutes installing the update until it failed giving an error code of 80070020.  From that I restarted the computer to see if I could try another stab at it, nothing changed or improved.

Now I looked in the Windows update history to see if the other required updates like KB2919442,**** KB2932046, KB2937592 and KB2938439 were installed and they aren't in the update history.  I thought they were installed already for KB2919355 to be installed.  Are all of these update files included in the KF2919355 update that pops up in the windows update?

Also, my update history can is only up to date in the control panel and doesn't show any updates installed in the modern PC settings app.  Did windows update fail to properly install updates required before trying to install later updates? What can and can't I install right now?

So far I've manually downloaded the links to  KB2919355, KB2919442, **** KB2932046, KB2937592 and KB2938439 posted in this thread:

I haven't installed anything yet.

Any help on why nothing has worked or installed properly?

Well, with the help of a tier 3 tech support, I've now backed everything up and reinstalled Windows 8.  All the updates have also finally been completed.  I had a bit of a panic last night when many of them failed but re-doing them this morning in 'chunks' seems to have done the trick.

Now I await his call this afternoon before I try to get Windows 8.1 back and then install all its updates - including the dreaded KB2919355!

I think it might be a good idea to get a system image backed up at this stage but I'll wait and see what he recommends.

    Wish me luck!

I sympathize with your problems but at least there is something positive from your response:

So now he's sending out 8.1 install media...

First of all let's try and keep this thread on track, no need to get in the which OS is best debate.

2nd of all, MS Tier 3 support logged in to my computer for the second time last night, and basically told me the only way to fix this was to "refresh" my system - which would put me back to 8 (since it's a **** OEM install of 8 and I have no install media) and I'd lose all my installed apps. He also couldn't guarantee it would even work. I said that's not an acceptable solution, if I'm going to have to go back and update it to 8.1 then attempt 8.1.1 and quite possibly have it fail again, on top of the many hours it would take for me to reinstall everything.

He told me to make a full backup of my computer, which I did. It's kind of scary when MS support suggests you take a full backup just because an update won't install.

He said if a refresh didn't work, then a full reset would be needed, ie a full reinstall where all apps AND documents are wiped - and even then couldn't guarantee it would fix it.

    I said that's unacceptable.

So he said maybe a repair install of 8.1 would work - leaving my apps and docs alone, that it had helped *some* people. Great, let's try that. Except he couldn't come up with a key to download 8.1 (and my OEM key didn't work to download it).

So now he's sending out 8.1 install media, I'll need to put it on a USB drive (since this netbook has no DVD drive) and I will try a repair install, then attempt the update.
