Windows 8.1 "working on features 100% complete don't turn off your computer"

Windows 8.1 asked update, I watched it go from 0% to 100%.  And now it's been stuck on the black screen with the above phrase while a circle keeps revolving.   This has been happening for the past 8 hours and there has been nothing I can do.  My laptop/tablet is the ASUS Transformer T100T and I've had it for one week.   Cannot access anything.   Right now, I'm waiting for the battery to die because I have no other choice.  And I cannot reboot by holding down the power button.  Please help.  I have a job interview tomorrow and would like to print out my resume.

Hi TeeDee,

Before we start with the troubleshooting steps, I would like to know some information about this issue.

  1. Have you connected any external devices other than mouse and keyboard?
  2. Are you using any third party security software on your computer?

If you have connected any external devices other than mouse and keyboard, then try disconnecting it and check.

I would suggest you to try the following methods and check if it works for you.

Method 1:

If you have an Installation Media, then Perform Hard Shut down and then try performing Automatic repair and check if it helps.

Follow the steps to perform automatic repair from Windows Recovery Environment:

Insert the Installation Media such as (USB or DVD) and restart your computer.

  1. Press F12 key (typically this is F12, but it can differ between computer manufacturers)and choose the drive that you inserted the installation media into.
  2. Once the Windows Setup window appears, follow these steps:
  3. Click Next and select Repair your computer.
  4. You will then see a blue screen and an option to choose. Choose the option Troubleshoot and select Advanced options.
  5. You may choose Automatic Repair from Advanced boot option.

Method 2:

Perform System Restore using the Installation Media and check if the issue persists.

Follow the steps to perform system restore:

  1. Insert the Installation Media such as (DVD or flash drive) and press F12 key and click on change default or other optionswhich is at the bottom of the screen.
  2. In the next screen click on troubleshoot option, this will display you different WinRE (Windows Recovery Environment) options to resolve issues with the computer when it is in no boot state.
  3. Now Click on System Restore, this will open up a Wizard and restore to a point when the computer was working fine.

If you do not have an Installation Media, then refer to the following Microsoft Help article to create an Installation Media.

    thanks guys

    its the usb mouse on my system too (asus essential desktop)... unplugged wireless dongle and it instantly moved past the 100% working to the login screen

    :O)

    This did the trick (I've performed the hard re-set 5 times). Thanks so much for sharing! I've also just purchased an Asus Zenbook 5 days ago and I've received this same 100% update screen freeze. Hopefully Windows 10 (can upgrade at end of month) won't have as many kinks!

    MinnieMe13 (Dec 27, 2024) endless switch-off / switch on solution has worked for me so far ... but here we are in July 7, 2015 and I am using Windows 8.1 on a 1 week old totally new MSI All-In-One Computer with high speed / 1 Tetra-byte and it makes no difference to this Operating System. IT IS Sooo SLOW fixing this mess no matter how fast the computer is! 

    I was uninstalling AVAST Antivirus (test) with restart when out-of-the-blue Windows 8.1 started installing Updates (even though I do not have automatic updates activated). I am a total Tech Geek ... Then the dreaded endless loop 100% do not switch off you computer starts to revolve in a never-ending loop on the screen in front of me. 

    As I am a Tech Geek I have the guts to try MinnieMe13 recovery attempt and I have to play this Windows 8.1 switch off / switch on game four or five times. In the last 5 years I NEVER had this kind of mess with Windows 7 = NEVER !!

    I have been able to manually repair Malware infested Win7 computers on my own using my own instincts and here I am STRUGGLING to recover my one week old ultra fast Computer from a Windows 8.1 update (error) loop. I call: Windows 8.1 loop of death. 

    On one level it is funny and on a more serious level it is NOT FUNNY !!

    MinnieMe13 advice has so far worked for me as I endlessly wait maybe half an hour for the restart because system repair could not "repair" the problem created by the Microsoft Windows 8.1 system ... With 15 years of computing experience I have never had to deal with anything like this until now = insane!

    I am writing this comment using my 5 year old Windows 7 MSI Wind PC that has NEVER given me this kind of headache = NOT EVER! From what I see we are all experiencing and trying to repair a "Fatal Error" in Windows 8.0 / 8.1 Operating System. 

    If you have the guts and the nerves and Geekiness to try MinnieMe13 solution? It works! But in some ways this is "insane" as the problem is caused internally by the Operating System we are all paying to use >_+ 

    My old MSI PC is my guide as my new MSI is repairing itself = you need 2 computers.

    Advice: Be patient with endless loop repair "Dark Screens" ... just wait them out!

    They are re-installing all the Apps that I uninstalled ?? INSANE !!

    All I can say is: Open the pod bay doors please Hal #_#
