Problem checking for updates - Code 80240442 - Windows Update ran into a problem

Just updated to 8.1 update 1 manually hoping that it would clear an issue I'm having with Windows update, but to no avail.  (Oh - and the error message before the Win8.1 Update 1 was 80244FFF.  I think it's the same issue, just a new number.)

I've not been able to connect to Windows Update for over a month, and nothing I've tried has managed to reset it.

bizarre, my update is working after months of failure. i am not joking. BUT only automatically. if i try to check for updates manually i receive the same error code and no updates

AND i believe i have the solution for all of these problems...

i needed to restart my modem. as soon as it had restarted, automatic updates worked. i think all who are suffering from this problem should at least give this a try. just unplug your modem, wait 30 seconds then re-plug in your modem or push the restart button. it is worth a try.

    Hello Paz,

Thank you again for the reply.

I would suggest you to try following methods and check if it helps.

    Method 1:

Run DISM tool and check the issue.

    Refer this article:

Fix Windows corruption errors by using the DISM or System Update Readiness tool

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

If it does not help, then use method 2.

    Method 2:

    Please follow these steps:

    a. Press Windows + R keys, type regedit in the run window and press Enter.

You may receive user account control message which shows, "Do you want to allow the following programs to make changes to this computer?", then please select "Yes".

    b. In registry editor, locate and then select the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS

    c. Right-click "COMPONENTS" and click "Export".

    d. In the File Name box, type "COMPONENTS".

    e. In the "Save in" box, click "Desktop", click "Save", and then save the file to the desktop.

    f. In the details pane, right-click "PendingXmlIdentifier", and then click "Delete". If this value does not

exist, go to the next step.

    g. In the details pane, right click "NextQueueEntryIndex", and then click "Delete". If this value does not exist, go to the next step.

    h. In the details pane, right click "AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving", and then click "Delete". If the value does not exist, go to the next step.

    i. Restart the computer and then try to install the updates again.

Note: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756

    I hope this information helps.

    Thank you

yes and like all other it does nothing to alleviate this problem. there is an issue somewhere that the ideas present here are not solving, there is no resolution to this issue as it continues to be a problem for many.

any new original and creative ideas are certainly welcome.

Same here....have more or less given up with this problem. I will be thinking very hard about whether purchasing another Windows operating system - when the time comes to upgrade - is a good idea.
