How do I find the product key for Windows 8.1

Microsoft to be helpful should provide easy responses to these questions.  They make a lot of money but they have lousy customer service.  Take note Microsoft and do something to fix this.

If the laptop was supplied with Windows 8 or 8.1 then you do not need to buy a key, it already has one integrated into the BIOS.

Use the link as suggested by Xircal to find out what the key is but there are few circumstances where you need the key if ever.

A new product key for the Windows 8.1 isn't created when you install it as an upgrade and your original Windows 8 product key remains intact.

I downloaded Windows 8.1 (free) from the Microsoft web site. My understanding was that in doing so, a new product key would be generated. I do not know where/how to find the new product key. Can someone help me out with this? Was I mistaken and do I use the product key I have for Windows 8?
