Original title: Product Key

I downloaded Windows 8.1 (free) from the Microsoft web site. My understanding was that in doing so, a new product key would be generated. I do not know where/how to find the new product key. Can someone help me out with this? Was I mistaken and do I use the product key I have for Windows 8?

If you registered the computer with Sony and it is not a year old contact Tech Support and they can reinstall it for you.

    Good luck

    Hello...

I bought Sony laptop. In that, there is windows 8 os by default. It given automatic update to 8.1. I updated it. Recently, I got Windows 10 update. I updated it also. Now I want to downgrade my laptop again to windows 8.1. But, I deleted windows.old in C Drive.

I tried installing original windows 8.1 by downloading from official site. But in the process, it asked about product key. As you said above, up to now, "Product Key on a computer that has Windows 8 pre-installed is embedded in the BIOS on the motherboard", but I need it in manually. Help me please

You can't see it because it is not there.

The circumstances in which you need the key were virtually negligible so the decision was made no to provide it in a written form.

Reset, recovery or factory restore do not require the key to be entered so what do you need the key for?

The situation has slightly changed but for the vast majority the idea still holds true. No key printed means it cannot be lost or defaced.
