How do I find the product key for Windows 8.1

Original title: Product Key

I downloaded Windows 8.1 (free) from the Microsoft web site. My understanding was that in doing so, a new product key would be generated. I do not know where/how to find the new product key. Can someone help me out with this? Was I mistaken and do I use the product key I have for Windows 8?

    Go to the link below and download Belark Advisor and follow instructions, make sure that there are no add-on’s checked:

    This software is free and will give you all of your software keys. Make sure you print a copy or save as a PDF. When you are donr remove the program.

    I have been getting the your Win 8.1 is due to expire the last day or so. Having only found out today, after frantic searching yesterday for a 8.1 Key, there is no Key for 8.1. I have retrieved my Win 8 Key. Having checked the System it doesn't say my Pre-install is OEM. It just says Windows is not activated. There is a product code down the bottom. It's due to run out on August 2nd.

    Now when I try my Win 8 Key it will not activate it.  Now I have reserved Win 10. Can I just wait and overwrite my entire OS and use the Win 10 Key to activate my machine?

    Or am I going to need to do a reinstall of 8 and then 8.1?

    Bear in mind I am fairly weak on doing complete reinstall's without a disc. I know I need to back up everything. Other than that, I am not sure where to or how to proceed.

    Edit:

    Just dug a CD out that has Recovery Disc printed on it, and Windows 8.1. If I install this will it validate my supposedly current 8.1 Windows? Of course the bigger question is, if this is Windows 8.1 why didn't it validate itself?

    And what do I need to do to run this? Never having been in this situation before.

    Activation key to reinstall my Windows 8 (it was already installed when I bought my computer in shop and there was no CD in package)

    The product key is embedded in the BIOS.  You can download a tool here that will retrieve it for you.  No one can send it to you.
