I updated my window 8 and this blue screen appear after it finished downloading the updates.

system thread exception not handles (athwb.sys)

and it freeze. I left it for more than 2 hours and it's still the same.

Does anyone know how to fix this? I restarted my laptop once and still get this same screen.

Also, I don't have window 8 CD/DVD whatsoever because I upgrade from window 7 via the internet. And the window 7 also come with the computer i.e. no CD or anything

Please help. Thank you in advance :)

PS. I use Toshiba and I can't remember what the updates are

Hello Harold,

Thank you for the update on the issue.

If issue still persists, I would suggest you to manually check if these keys are struck or if anything stuck in between the keys which could prevent the key from functioning properly. If nothing was found, I would suggest you to open the onscreen keyboard and check if these keys work. If these work in the onscreen keyboard, then the issue might be caused due to driver or a faulty hardware.

You can refer to this article to open the on screen keyboard:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/type-with-the-on-screen-keyboard

If these work in the onscreen keyboard, then the issue might be caused due to driver or a faulty hardware. In this case, I would suggest you to try the following steps and check if it helps.

Method 1: Try Hardware and devices troubleshooter

The hardware and devices troubleshooter can detect and fix errors and incorrect settings in devices. You can run the built in troubleshooter in Windows 8 and check by following these steps:

a) Press Windows Key + X, select control panel

b) Change the ‘view by’ option on the top right to **‘Larger icons’**c) Select the Troubleshooting option and click ‘view all’ on the left panel

d) Run the ‘**Hardware and devices ‘**troubleshooter.

Method 2:

Un-install and re-install keyboard drivers from the manufacturer’s website and see if that helps:

Step 1: un-install the drivers:

Follow these steps:

a. Press “Windows Key + W” from the keyboard.

b. Type “device Manager” without quotes in the search box and hit enter.

c. Right click on the keyboard drivers and select “Uninstall”.

d. Restart the computer once it is uninstalled.

Note: Before uninstalling the driver, please make sure that you have downloaded the latest driver for the keyboard device from the manufacturer website.

Step 2:

You can download the latest driver for keyboard from the following link.

Hope this helps. If you have any further issues, please get back to us and we would be happy to help you.

Hello Ice Chayanit,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community Forum.

I would appreciate if you can provide us the following information to help us understand the issue in a better way.

  1. Do you remember the Windows Update which has caused this issue?
  2. Are all the device drivers updated?

System Thread Exception Not Handled error in Windows 8 mostly arises due to incompatible or old graphics card drivers. System Thread Exception Not Handled error is often displayed along with the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).

After the Blue Screen of Death is displayed with System Thread Exception Not Handled error, even if the computer is powered off and then powered back on, it keeps getting restarted after every few seconds.

In order to fix this issue, the computer must be restarted in safe mode, and the problematic graphics driver must be uninstalled. Once this is done, the latest driver of the installed graphics card must be downloaded from the vendor’s official site, and must be installed in order to make the Windows 8 system work.

In order to Enter Safe Mode and Uninstall Graphics Card Driver you can follow the below mentioned steps.

In order to enter safe mode, the legacy advanced boot screen must be enabled in Windows 8. Once the advanced boot screen is enabled, the installed graphics card driver can be uninstalled by going to the Device Manager after booting the computer in safe mode.

Windows Startup Settings (including safe mode)

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode

After logging in safe mode try the below mentioned steps and see if it works.

  1. Log on to Windows 8 computer with the account that has the administrative privileges.
  2. Click Desktop tile from the Start screen to go to the desktop screen.
  3. Once on the desktop screen, hover mouse to the bottom right corner of the window.
  4. From the displayed options, click Settings.
  5. On the Settings pane, click Control Panel.
  6. On the opened All Control Panel Items window, click Device Manager.

        7. On Device Manager Window, expand Display adapter’s category. 8. Once expanded, right-click the graphics driver that is to be uninstalled.

9. From the context menu that appears, click Uninstall to remove the selected graphics driver. 10. On Confirm Device Uninstall box, click OK to confirm the graphics driver uninstallation. 11. Wait till the selected driver is uninstalled and restart the Windows 8 computer if required in order to allow the changes to take effect. 12. After uninstallation process try to update the drivers from the manufacturer’s website.

Additional Information:

You can try to update the drivers from the below mentioned link**.**

    Hello Riyant,

Thank you for the update on the issue and sorry for delayed response.

If issue still persists try to check the system files are they working fine or not and to check that try to run System File Checker (SFC) tool.

SFC scan will scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows 8.

    1. Press Windows key and X at the same time.
    2. Choose Command Prompt (Admin) from the context menu.
    3. In the command prompt, type sfc /scannow and hit Enter.
    4. Exit command prompt.

For more information refer to this link:
