Asus Vivotab RT: flash doesn't work!

Hello,

I have a problem with my LED flash.

4 days ago I've bought Asus Vivotab RT. I've run it, updated and installed some apps from a Store. 

I also made a few photos in dark to try my LED diode and flash. Everything worked fine.

On Thursday Microsoft released an Windows 8.1 RT update. I couldn't wait for install it.

After the installation my OS works fine but the only problem was that I had to reinstall apps from Store because all my apps had been in Czech and changed language to English.

But yesterday I wanted to take a photo at night and there was no flash, my photo was dark. I tried different apps: from Microsoft  - Camera and original from Asus - Asus Camera. I've reinstall Asus Camera many times but when I press More options there is no Asus option for flash or diode and no special effects as sepia or contrast as it had been.

I've searched on Google for similar problems and the conclusion mostly was that Asus or Microsoft has to release an update. Those questions were half year old so I'm not sure how it is with updates now.

Has anyone same problems or experience with it? What shall I do?

Do I have to return my tablet and ask for a new one?

(please note that u should be doing this from the asus vivo rt assuming the asus camera app is already installed)

1.  Go here:

  1. Click on download then select the OS  => Windows RT
  2. Click on the plus sign next to Utilties

You will then see the part with description "Camera flash not working..."

  1. Go ahead and click on the first Global DLM
  2. It will download the the rar file to the tab
  3. extraxt the rar en then execute the camera.reg (just double click on it) and confirm when asked if you want to modify the registry etc..
  4. reboot the tab
  5. and then just wait..

after a while.. (it took me about 15 minutes) just start the asus camera app en open more options, you will notice the difference

Good News! I just got another email from Asus about the flash.

Quote:  We have a fix for the camera flash slated to be released this week. So if you haven't updated yet, and was concerned due to the camera issue, we have sorted it out and the camera will now work 100% with Windows 8.1 on the VivoTab RT!

    I have been in contact with Asus and this was their reply:

    "We are aware of the issue. The strange thing is not everyone is experiencing it. However, we are working with Microsoft right now to come out with an update that should fix the camera. There should be no need to revert back to Windows 8."

    Unfortunately, they cannot give a timeframe when this will be done

    Noone resonded to me in Czech Republic.

    It looks like problem depends on the version, date of release or serial number of tablet.

    Anyway we have to wait for an update.

    The discussion was helpful and maybe Microsoft knows about problem now.

    Hi Igor,

    I purchased my VivoTab RT Just over 1 week ago, camera was fine & included options like Sepia, etc.

    Installed Windows 8.1 Update because I kept being prompted. After several attempts it finally installed.

    Today I decided to test flash in a dark room. No Flash... no option to choose it - and the effects options such as Sepia are gone.

    So you are not the only one with this problem. Sounds like a worldwide issue.  Programming in the 8.1 Update didn't take the VivoTab's camera & flash into consideration. 

    Couple days after I purchased VivoTab RT - ASUS announced they were dropping it from their line...hence no support from ASUS.

    On 11/22/13 - Nokia Lumia 2520 started selling in my area.  Still runs RT, but faster processor and brighter full HD screen.  The Nokia camera does not have a flash.  However it does have a Zeiss lens. 

    From the online research I've done so far, Zeiss lenses perform better than most in low light situations. 

    For my money - if the flash isn't going to work on the ASUS anyway - then the Lumia may be the better choice.

    Then - Nokia just sold it's tablet division to Microsoft.  Which probably means the Lumia 2520 will not be supported and it's functionality rolled into the Surface RT.   

    So in summation:

          ASUS isn't supporting the VivoTab RT.  

          Nokia probably won't support the Lumia because it's been sold to Microsoft.  

          Microsoft probably won't support the VivoTab RT or the Lumia because they sell the Surface RT.

    I initially chose the ASUS because it has 4G/LTE capability. The Lumia hadn't started selling when I purchased the VivoTab RT.  The Surface RT isn't really a choice for me because at present it doesn't have the 3G/4G capability.

    So speculating here - next year the Surface RT will have 4G/LTE capability as a result of Microsoft purchasing Nokia's tablet division. 

    So I'm going to return my beloved VivoTab RT - get the Nokia Lumia 2520 and then see what comes down the wire next year.

    I hope this is someway helpful to your decision making as well.
