[UNSOLVED] Asus Taichi back screen (lid) not working AGAIN after windows 8.1 update 1

JP8851 has provided a new BIOS version for people who have the Taichi21 or 21a (answer marked below) . The BIOS version is not official yet, however, and many users are reporting problems with the BIOS update such as USB problems, pen digitizer problems and audio problems. Therfore I have still marked this problem unsolved, but the first answer below may work for you.

Original question:

THIS IS A PROBLEM YET AGAIN.

ASUS, MICROSOFT, AND INTEL: HUNDREDS (IF NOT THOUSANDS) OF USERS ARE FRUSTRATED BY YOUR LACK OF SUPPORT AND COMPATIBILITY CHECKS WITH EVERY UPDATE. WHY SHOULD A $1000+ LAPTOP BE NEGLECTED THE PROPER "V.I.P." SUPPORT WE WERE PROMISED? PLEASE FIX THIS PROMPTLY, IT IS FRUSTRATING FOR THE USERS TO FIGURE OUT WHAT GOES WRONG EVERY TIME WINDOWS UPDATES.

Note:

Previously, the Asus Taichi had problems with the back screen not working after the windows 8.1 update. Recently, Micrsosoft released a NEW UPDATE that ruined the fix mentioned below, and all the supposedly long term fixes Asus made with the bios updates and the graphics driver updates.

This problem had originally been solved for windows 8.1 (without update 1) by downloading the following old graphics driver from the asus website:

http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/DriversForWin8/VGA/VGA_Intel_Taichi_Win7_64_Win8_64_Z917102857.zip

***It is noted that if the problem keeps coming back after installing this driver, you may have to change your Windows and Intel Driver update setting and turn off auto updating.

Other notes: This driver downgrade solves the issue with the lid not working, but some users have reported that many smaller problems arise after downgrading. Therefore, this solution is not completely stable, but it is a lot better than any other solution currently available and solves the main issue.

Original comments: After updating to windows 8.1, the back screen of my Asus Taichi does not work properly. After doing some searching, I read there were numerous problems with the Taichi after the update, all driver related.

This is great news... Glad it's working with Intel 3412 as I have that installed already on my 21A. If Asus send out the new Bios for the 21A I will share it and ask the same from anyone who receives it please.

Well people, ASUS has come through with the new Bios for Taichi 21 & 21A. They emailed me the zip files this afternoon. Took me a couple hours to backup and test before posting.

The 21 takes Bios 211 and 21A takes 205. I've uploaded them here:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/mxb1trbbctlnjm3/TAICHI21AS.211.zip

https://www.dropbox.com/s/5ztcmga0mbv40i5/TAICHI21AAS.205.zip

To check which Bios you need if you haven't checked already is to reboot and press F2 until you see the Bios screen. When displayed, press F12 and the Bios you have will scroll through in the lower right hand corner of the screen. Use the 2420 version of Winflash from the Asus support site.

After flashing the firmware Bios to 205 on my 21A, I installed 8.1 Update from Windows Update and my screen is working correctly.

Thumbs up Asus.

Ironically the Bios was dated 21/4/14. Seems Asus has had this fix for a while and probably testing before releasing so I don't feel like a guinea pig. But I do feel some of you owe Asus a small apology for some of the comments aimed at them despite it taking too long to come through. In any case, I'm not reactivating auto-updates in Windows Updates.

Good luck people and the usual disclaimer applies to using these files. Caveat Emptor...

I had the same problem. It started after some time.  Twice I've tried to install and the same problem.

After a long hard working weekend I moved again to win 8 and stay there for now.

P.s: it is not the only issue unresolved. Juniper concoction disconnecting is another.

What a mess..

I agree, this update is a complete mess. I was able to resolve the issue with the lid by downloading an old graphics driver from the asus website. Heres the link to download the driver:  http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/DriversForWin8/VGA/VGA_Intel_Taichi_Win7_64_Win8_64_Z917102857.zip

The driver is older, so if you would rather just reinstall windows 8, I found that you just do a restore or refresh in the system settings. Thanks for your help again.

Still no news on the update? I am running Windows 8.1.1 I figured for the moment it's best to do nothing and just live with having the clamshell screen only until the fix is released if it's soon. But if we don't hear anything for another week then I'll uninstall KB2919355.

Also I have noticed that when the lid is closed and you turn the computer on, it's not that the front screen doesn't turn on, it's just that it's really dim. If I turn it on an angle I can the outline of the icons and that the screen responds to touch. But I can't seem to make it brighter. Of course that's not the only problem because the screen change key doesn't work properly. But if the brightness problem was fixed at least I could use both screens by hitting power to suspend and then opening/closing the lid and turning on from suspend.

    Dear Alexis,

Thanks for trying to calm people down, while I remain appreciative of everyone posting in this forum as it contains some very useful information for an "IT novice" like me!

I don't think we should get into ethnic issues (speaking as someone who considers Barcelona his second home), however I think we should all agree that ASUS Support could do better - interestingly I just received a request from ASUS VIP Service to participate in their "2014 ASUS Notebook Satisfaction Survey" so I will use it to air our concerns with the TAICHI-line and urge them to do better (I'll provide the link to this thread as well)!!

Allow me as well to clarify my situation: I have a TAICHI31 running with Windows 8.1 and the CloseLid beta (19 something) - and honestly 95% of the time it runs well, sometimes it shows signs of a problem with the 2 lids (and "details" like not being able to change the brightness when using the touch screen - on occasion, so not always).

When I bought it (July 2013) it was on Windows 8, and when 8.1 update came I had the problems with touch screen so arrived at this forum...I downloaded the CloseLid beta and it seemed to work. Then my TAICHI just crashed, and I had to send it back after which they replaced the motherboard and all my data & programmes were gone. It was back on Windows 8 so I could start all over again - downloaded 8.1 from the Store, then CloseLid beta and this is where I am now...with the luck that I had disabled automatic updates so I didn't get the dreaded 8.1.1 update KB2919355 (yet, it keeps showing up in Windows Update looking threatening and waiting for me to install it one day when I feel adventurous).

So my TAICHI31 is working almost to satisfaction, and I never "flashed" the BIOS as I don't even know what this really means...by now I have a pretty good idea how to do this, but I have not done it so far as all seems to work so I am afraid to screw it up...

My question: if a new BIOS will come out to allow us to work with 8.1.1, do I first need to "flash" to the current BIOS on the ASUS-website or can I just skip this step and get the very latest BIOS (when ASUS finally releases it)?

Also, should I first install the 8.1.1 update (and suffer the consequences) before getting the new BIOS, or can I get the new BIOS and then do the update (hoping it would then work properly)?

    Thanks for your insights!!

    Tom

PS/ I did download another update yesterday, a Security Update for Internet Explorer (you know the story of massive IE vulnerabilities) and I could download it without being on 8.1.1 - however, interestingly this IE-update mentioned it was specifically for Windows x64bit 8.1 without update KB2919355...interesting that Microsoft takes such a particular situation into account, no?!

Hey, dont get all over me, im just saying that this is complex machine that requieres more tweaking than a regular laptop to keep up to date. Nearly every dual screen / tablet hybrid, has problems with these new windows updates, go look around in the forums.

Asus is by no means responsible for not warning to not apply a Windows upgrade. If you apply it, it is because you have done some research about the new update or ticked automatic updates.

Its a 3rd generation computer, and as with many other devices, cell phones, etc. new Operating Systems can mess up drivers and so on.

I have the Taichi 31, have upgraded, downgraded, restored etc, and my partition is intact, so the problem might not be unique, but its not general like the video driver updates. Sending it back to Asus will get you the partition back.

I understand this is a discontinued product, and are taking care of the issue of this 8.1.1 mess, it could have been much worse.

Dont count on actions being taken, i do not know how many Taichis have been sold, here we are around 15 complaining, that is nothing for a giant like Asus.

Oh, and in catalonia everybody speaks spanish, whether they like it more or less, it is still the official, national language
