[UNSOLVED] Asus Taichi back screen (lid) not working AGAIN after windows 8.1 update 1

JP8851 has provided a new BIOS version for people who have the Taichi21 or 21a (answer marked below) . The BIOS version is not official yet, however, and many users are reporting problems with the BIOS update such as USB problems, pen digitizer problems and audio problems. Therfore I have still marked this problem unsolved, but the first answer below may work for you.

ASUS, MICROSOFT, AND INTEL: HUNDREDS (IF NOT THOUSANDS) OF USERS ARE FRUSTRATED BY YOUR LACK OF SUPPORT AND COMPATIBILITY CHECKS WITH EVERY UPDATE. WHY SHOULD A $1000+ LAPTOP BE NEGLECTED THE PROPER "V.I.P." SUPPORT WE WERE PROMISED? PLEASE FIX THIS PROMPTLY, IT IS FRUSTRATING FOR THE USERS TO FIGURE OUT WHAT GOES WRONG EVERY TIME WINDOWS UPDATES.

Note:

Previously, the Asus Taichi had problems with the back screen not working after the windows 8.1 update. Recently, Micrsosoft released a NEW UPDATE that ruined the fix mentioned below, and all the supposedly long term fixes Asus made with the bios updates and the graphics driver updates.

This problem had originally been solved for windows 8.1 (without update 1) by downloading the following old graphics driver from the asus website:

***It is noted that if the problem keeps coming back after installing this driver, you may have to change your Windows and Intel Driver update setting and turn off auto updating.

Other notes: This driver downgrade solves the issue with the lid not working, but some users have reported that many smaller problems arise after downgrading. Therefore, this solution is not completely stable, but it is a lot better than any other solution currently available and solves the main issue.

This is great news... Glad it's working with Intel 3412 as I have that installed already on my 21A. If Asus send out the new Bios for the 21A I will share it and ask the same from anyone who receives it please.

Well people, ASUS has come through with the new Bios for Taichi 21 & 21A. They emailed me the zip files this afternoon. Took me a couple hours to backup and test before posting.

The 21 takes Bios 211 and 21A takes 205. I've uploaded them here:

To check which Bios you need if you haven't checked already is to reboot and press F2 until you see the Bios screen. When displayed, press F12 and the Bios you have will scroll through in the lower right hand corner of the screen. Use the 2420 version of Winflash from the Asus support site.

After flashing the firmware Bios to 205 on my 21A, I installed 8.1 Update from Windows Update and my screen is working correctly.

Ironically the Bios was dated 21/4/14. Seems Asus has had this fix for a while and probably testing before releasing so I don't feel like a guinea pig. But I do feel some of you owe Asus a small apology for some of the comments aimed at them despite it taking too long to come through. In any case, I'm not reactivating auto-updates in Windows Updates.

I had the same problem. It started after some time. Twice I've tried to install and the same problem.

After a long hard working weekend I moved again to win 8 and stay there for now.

P.s: it is not the only issue unresolved. Juniper concoction disconnecting is another.

I agree, this update is a complete mess. I was able to resolve the issue with the lid by downloading an old graphics driver from the asus website. Heres the link to download the driver: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/DriversForWin8/VGA/VGA_Intel_Taichi_Win7_64_Win8_64_Z917102857.zip

The driver is older, so if you would rather just reinstall windows 8, I found that you just do a restore or refresh in the system settings. Thanks for your help again.

Hi, I've got the Taichi 21 about two months ago to upgrade from my old Lenovo Thinkpad 10 before starting the new school year and has been working just as I wanted, Having the notebook keyboard for typing essays and having a digitizer pen for taking notes...

**Anyways just recently Outside screen didn't go black, but the Inside Screen did...**I can not even get the BIOS or the Bootup Splash Screen to show up on it.

On the Taichi Home with the Taichi closed It will say that it is in Tablet mode and will not let me select any other option, When I open the lid the desktop will say on the top screen with out even flashing - Taichi Home will Automaticly close and when I open it again it will say it is on notebook mode while still being on the top screen and it won't let me select any of the other options. I can even use the keyboard and mouse pad when it is like this, but if I press the Taichi key the back screen will turn off and the ASUS logo will turn on while the inside screen backlight comes on but nothing appears on the screen. To use the computer after that I have to close the lid and put the computer to sleep and then wake it up again.

I have tried reinstalling windows (W10) with the correct drivers and even reinstalled the BIOS to no avail :(

I do love this device - Wondering if it may be hardware related, I could replace the screen assembly if I had to...

I would love any thoughts on this problem, Thanks,

Just wanted to share my experience with getting the keyboard backlight working.

If it lights at boot but not in windows then it's probably software so try uninstall and reinstall APK.

Myne was showing no light at all even at boot. At first I thought it might be a W10 thing as I recently upgraded - before the free upgrades stop! However I also replaced the motherboard (another story...) and upgraded the bios with WinFlash - I'm not sure which caused the problem as wasn't paying attention but sure it was one of these. The fix which worked and was much simpler than it initially seems is as described at the following thread;

As a bonus the thread also includes a way of getting the backlight on during logon - had always annoyed me the way it went off at that point. Just need to schedule HControl.exe within ATKhotkey folder to run at startup before user login.

Hi All,

After upgrading our various PCs at home to windows 10, I took a system image of my Tachi31 running windows 8.1 and initiated the upgrade to windows 10. Three weeks later and I can report that I'm satisfied with the way things have turned out.

General comments:
- I had to load the older 3412 intel graphics driver due to inversion issues in mirror mode. I also had to run a Microsoft hide utility to stop auto-update reloading the newer driver .
- The auto-rotate in tablet mode no longer works.
- Laptop to tablet transition by closing/opening the lid works reliably.
- The spit screen-share mode doesn't really work. There isn't the total independence of the screens any more. The outer screen continually displays the wallpaper. You can open applications from the outer screen, however they open onto the inside screen. To be honest, I've never used this function, so it's no great loss.
- I removed the ASUS Power4gear utility and went back to the generic windows power mgmt utility. I added a shortcut to the taskbar to enable quick switching between the modes. When using the power saver mode I can get 5+ hours of use.
- I'm not real operating system zealot, but windows 10 looks nice and I like the ability to quickly switch between tablet and PC modes
- I didn't think of this initially, but you can't disable the automated loading of updates in windows 10 like we could in 8.1. It's a bit of a risk with a PC like this, but I've set regular restore points and hope they will provide some level of protection.
Other than that my Taichi is as productive as it was under 8.1 and more efficient.
