[UNSOLVED] Asus Taichi back screen (lid) not working AGAIN after windows 8.1 update 1

JP8851 has provided a new BIOS version for people who have the Taichi21 or 21a (answer marked below) . The BIOS version is not official yet, however, and many users are reporting problems with the BIOS update such as USB problems, pen digitizer problems and audio problems. Therfore I have still marked this problem unsolved, but the first answer below may work for you.

THIS IS A PROBLEM YET AGAIN.

ASUS, MICROSOFT, AND INTEL: HUNDREDS (IF NOT THOUSANDS) OF USERS ARE FRUSTRATED BY YOUR LACK OF SUPPORT AND COMPATIBILITY CHECKS WITH EVERY UPDATE. WHY SHOULD A $1000+ LAPTOP BE NEGLECTED THE PROPER "V.I.P." SUPPORT WE WERE PROMISED? PLEASE FIX THIS PROMPTLY, IT IS FRUSTRATING FOR THE USERS TO FIGURE OUT WHAT GOES WRONG EVERY TIME WINDOWS UPDATES.

Note:

Previously, the Asus Taichi had problems with the back screen not working after the windows 8.1 update. Recently, Micrsosoft released a NEW UPDATE that ruined the fix mentioned below, and all the supposedly long term fixes Asus made with the bios updates and the graphics driver updates.

This problem had originally been solved for windows 8.1 (without update 1) by downloading the following old graphics driver from the asus website:

***It is noted that if the problem keeps coming back after installing this driver, you may have to change your Windows and Intel Driver update setting and turn off auto updating.

Other notes: This driver downgrade solves the issue with the lid not working, but some users have reported that many smaller problems arise after downgrading. Therefore, this solution is not completely stable, but it is a lot better than any other solution currently available and solves the main issue.

This is great news... Glad it's working with Intel 3412 as I have that installed already on my 21A. If Asus send out the new Bios for the 21A I will share it and ask the same from anyone who receives it please.

Well people, ASUS has come through with the new Bios for Taichi 21 & 21A. They emailed me the zip files this afternoon. Took me a couple hours to backup and test before posting.

The 21 takes Bios 211 and 21A takes 205. I've uploaded them here:

To check which Bios you need if you haven't checked already is to reboot and press F2 until you see the Bios screen. When displayed, press F12 and the Bios you have will scroll through in the lower right hand corner of the screen. Use the 2420 version of Winflash from the Asus support site.

After flashing the firmware Bios to 205 on my 21A, I installed 8.1 Update from Windows Update and my screen is working correctly.

Thumbs up Asus.

Ironically the Bios was dated 21/4/14. Seems Asus has had this fix for a while and probably testing before releasing so I don't feel like a guinea pig. But I do feel some of you owe Asus a small apology for some of the comments aimed at them despite it taking too long to come through. In any case, I'm not reactivating auto-updates in Windows Updates.

I had the same problem. It started after some time.  Twice I've tried to install and the same problem.

After a long hard working weekend I moved again to win 8 and stay there for now.

 

P.s: it is not the only issue unresolved. Juniper concoction disconnecting is another.

I agree, this update is a complete mess. I was able to resolve the issue with the lid by downloading an old graphics driver from the asus website. Heres the link to download the driver:  http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/DriversForWin8/VGA/VGA_Intel_Taichi_Win7_64_Win8_64_Z917102857.zip

The driver is older, so if you would rather just reinstall windows 8, I found that you just do a restore or refresh in the system settings. Thanks for your help again.

    Hi Dave,

    I'm glad the link worked for you. I have seen that around 30 people have downloaded it, so there seems to be a need ;-)

    I experience the same as you do: all seems to work, but indeed the flip screen doesn't rotate anymore after switching on. It's a minor glitch compare to the previous situation, but unfortunately, it's not solved yet as it should be. I have informed Asus about it, and I suggest all 31 users that have the same to do the same. Let's hope that the team who created the new BIOS is still together....

    And yes.... I also want to get rid of the weird partitions on my SSD. One of my developers suggested that they have always been there, but not visible, and W8.1 makes them visible..but I can't find confirmation for that.

    Going back to the Taichi 31. I got bored with waiting for Asus to put BIOS update 209 up on their website so I decided to have go at the link kindly given here.

    It's a bogs standard 31, as delivered, except right up to date with Windows.

    Firstly I looked at my BIOS and found it was version 207.

    So I trundled out 208 and installed it in case 209 didn't work over 207. Result: disaster, the only indication  that the thing was not a black tea tray was the light on the charger.

    So, pressing on, on the grounds that things can't get worse I installed 209.

    And it worked!

    Clearly this is only a beta version with a great long list of minor items to be fixed, but at least, with one exception, the 31 begins to show the way it could be value for money.

    The fault outstanding is autorotate on the flip screen. That does seem to know at start up which way up the machine is, one of only two ways  but after that, zilch.

    Having done a lot of ferreting around I find that Windows 8.1 came as a surprise to Microsoft. Many of the help screens are so out of date as to be useless - I assume they refer to 8, because for sure they don't refer to 7.

    I get no answer from here or elsewhere on how to remove the unwanted disc partitions so I can expand C:. With an SSD of this small size, two thirds taken up with empty partitions installed by Asus, this is becoming an issue.

    Ok, i've been following this thread quietly. Since it saved my but, i feel forced to reciprocate.

    I've a Taichi 21A, since last friday, i was considering returning the Taichi, but was too impressed to not try all possible venues to resolve the problem and keep this wonderfull machine.

    You guys helped me do just that. My Taichi now works 100% on windows 8.1 inclusive the dreaded update.

    This is how i did it, should someone be looking for this kind of information :

    1. When the tablet screen stopped working, i brought the laptop to factory configuration ( used ASUS backtracker )
    2. updated the BIOS to 204
    3. Did the full install of Windows 8, inclusive all microsoft updates i could get.
    4. checked that the tablet screen still worked ok
    5. Made an image of the whole SSD
    6. Waited with much trepidation for a BIOS for the Taichi 21A, you can guess how i felt when it was posted! Thanks a million JP8851!!!!
    7. Flashed the BIOS to 205
    8. Installed windows 8.1 from the store ( includes the dreaded update )
    9. Checked the tablet screen : what do you know, IT STILL WORKS!!!!
    10. Installed all updates i could find from windows + asus site ( close lid 1.1.8, display 3412, etc... )
    11. Tablet screen continues to work : tablet mode has correct orientation, and mirror too. Touch is also ok.
    12. Yeah, i can keep the damn thing, no need to return it!

    Hope this may help someone.

    Returning to my hideout ;-)
