Hi All
Just to throw my two cents in on this discussion (which probably will not help at all). I am on an HP m6 sleekbook, which is not even a year old yet.
I bought the machine with 8 and successfully "upgraded" to 8.1 when the update became available. I was running 8.1 with no problems. In performing regular updates through Windows Update I chose to install an optional Intel driver update. The install never
finished and disabled my display. Neither Intel, HP or Microsoft were of help. The amusing part was that Intel blamed HP for taking their update and customizing it for their machines, thus attempting to remove blame from themselves. HP blamed Intel for
making driver updates not compatible with their machines thus the need for customization. And Microsoft just shakes their heads. The amusing thing to me is that there is an update for my Intel driver available on the Intel site but I am not allowed access
to it because HP will not let me do it, and there is no known override. Anyway, back to the problem at hand. Getting no help from anyone I had to perform a system refresh in order to save my files, which as most of you probably know, reverts the machine
back to factory settings, and in my case, back to Windows 8. So I immediately tried to upgrade back to 8.1, no success after about 5 tries on my own. I turned to Microsoft and HP, allowing a total of four tech to remotely mess with my machine, and all with
the same result, no upgrade. Every time the install attempts I get through set up, restart, getting devices ready, restart, dead display with the machine still working for about 30 minutes, then it stalls completely, I manually restart, I get attempting to
recover installation, restart, dead display, I manually restart, restoring previous version of windows, restart, windows 8 is back and I get the good ole error message that this thread is named for. EVERY STINKING TIME!
I have tried multiple versions of ideas that I have found. I have tried about 97% of what is described on 17 pages of this discussion. And in many cases tried multiple times. All with the same result. In my situation I can only assume the problem lies in
the graphics driver since that is where my problems started. And based on what I have seen in this discussion that appears to be the main culprit and the reason for the second half of the error message.
So my question to the Microsoft moderator and techs is this: Why has there not been a noted fix for this issue since, based on this discussion, the issue is several months old? You get paid a ridiculous amount of money to fix these issues so just do your
job instead of making us do it for you.
And now I am just venting. Why is it that the update is only free if you do it through the Windows Store, which is a joke in the first place. I found a thread that would allow me to manually download the update and install it, if I have a product key. Common
sense would dictate that by purchasing a laptop with Windows 8, that I would have access to the product key for a product that I paid for. But no. Microsoft is no longer allowing those that purchase the product any access to the product key. AS it was explained
to me the product key is digitally inscribed within the motherboard and none, not even the owner of the product can gain access to it. SO I am then told that the only way to manually install an upgrade is to pay for a disk which gives me a product key. Can
anyone explain the logic in this? I buy a machine with Windows 8 for near $1000 dollars, but I have to spend more money to get access to what I have already bought? If the update is going to be free, and then there are obvious technical problems that are
solely on the manufacturer, why do I have to pay to fix your problem? This is not moral, ethical business practice. It is your responsibility to fix the problem at no cost to the ones that have already paid for the product. That would be like making someone
that has purchased a car pay for the repairs when a company announces a recall. You will not see that ever from the auto industry because it is not moral, ethical business practice.
MICROSOFT...GET IT TOGETHER AND FIX YOUR PROBLEM.
I'm done. Have a great day with Windows 8.
