Flight Sim X will not work on Windows 8.1

I have the official release of 8.1 now, downloaded last night and FSX still does not work.

I can get through the menus but when I click to fly now, it drops me back to the desktop and gives me a fatal error.

I have tried:

 1. A system restore back to windows 8, followed by the 8.1 upgrade.

 2. Fresh install of FSX with no add-ons

 3. Tried 'run as admin' and all different compatibility modes.

It still does not work...FS2004 works great. FSX did work in Windows 8.0 fine.

This needs to be fixed, otherwise Microsoft will have killed FSX.

    Hi BullGod

If I bought a vehicle and, following an initial service by a division of the company during which they changed the electronic system it failed to work, damned right I'd expect it to be fixed by them as a matter of urgency and at no cost to me.

If I'd been running FSX on an old PC with an early version of Windows and FSX didn't work properly, or if I'd replaced some components in my PC with unusual versions and it stopped working because of something Ihad done to the configuration - then that would be down to me to fix.

As far as I am aware, FSX is still being sold as a Microsoft product and is show on the MS compatibility website as working with WIN 8.1. (This was certainly the case when I installed it) FSX worked under WIN 8 and failed to work as soon as MS "upgraded" my system to WIN 8.1. I stand by my view that they caused the problem and they have a moral responsibility to sort it out.

You have identified a solution that appears to work - and they should negotiate with you to include that solution (or someone else's) into an official release which should be distributed by MS to registered users of FSX on WIN 8.1 - after they've verified that it doesn't cause other issues elsewhere.

I am angry and disgusted that MS have just washed their hands of this problem.

Personally I'm not prepared to gamble with my main PC set up - which is why I've bought another PC running Windows XP which I use exclusively for FSX. That has solved my immediate problem and I now have a system I can play with. It doesn't make me any less angry with MS though!

    regards

IF this is the answer, why on earth doesn't Microsoft issue an official update to FSX or WIN 8.1 to make the change - after checking that it doesn't impact on other MS products such as Office?

I may be being overly cautious but there are a lot of folks out there who delight in creating viruses and damaging other people's computers; I don't want to be impolite (so please don't be offended) - but how do I know that "BullGod" and "microsoftproblems" are genuine and that the file to be downloaded won't wreck my PC? Maybe the risk is very low but the impact would be horrendous!

Apart from that, this issue must be impacting on a lot of users who haven't seen this suggestion. It really is up to Microsoft to take responsibility for this problem and resolve it officiallyso that FSX works PROPERLY under WIN 8.1 for everyone.

I agree with fireB1rd here: (and fireB1rd, you are not being impolite, nor do I take offence. You seem like a very intelligent person, and I agree with you. Education about safety and security is very important, and it is our job as enthusiasts to spread the word and help form good habits):

Being cautious with ANY file you decide to DL from the internet is very important. You can not be careful enough, ever.  Please make sure to scan every file you get from the internet, and do not count on just one piece of software to do the task.

With that said, rest assured I have tested, scanned, and verified the file I posted. Please, do not trust me, or anyone else. Scan all files on your own, and get in the habit of doing so. Make your own choice as to if you find the file safe to use, before you find it effective for the problem.

Together we can educate, and make the internet a safer place for everyone. As with everything, "it isn't like it used to be".

It would be nice to see MS publically post a solution, but they should not be expected to. The division that created the project, ( **ACES** ), no longer exists.  So, we as enthusiasts take over and do what we are able to make the software compatible through trial and error. We share what we find to make the software work for us, and pass that information along to anyone who might want to try it.

And before you say it, if you happen to drive a Pontiac, and you have a problem with it, do you demand that they get back together to solve your problem just because you own one? No, that wont happen.  You fix the problem, or you find someone who can. We come together as a community, and fix it.

    Same thing here.

    Warmest regards.

THANK YOU!  These settings within FSX appear to have stabilized the app for me.  I still got an error, but far less frequent than what I was getting.

Excellent, kifr !! I am glad it worked for you as well.

I also skyrocketed my frame rate and stopped ALL crashing including when using the menu while in fullscreen (normally would crach after a few uses, like on a long flight, or an aircraft change).

To do so, I am using an alternate UIAutomationCore.dll.  FSX has never been a better experience. It now runs flawlessly.

If you want to try, download the file from my OneDrive ( http://1drv.ms/1ci0HOJ ) and place it in your main FSX directory. It is a proper working UIAutomationCore.dll that will improve frame rate, as well as allow you to change any menu variables while in a full screen flight. No more crashing after a few uses of the menu. That menu crash problem plagued me since install. It is no more :-)

You will be amazed, It is like a new game afterwards.  Runs better for me than it ever has.

    GAME ON!
