Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center doesn't recognize Sculpt Comfort Keyboard (Windows 8.1 x64)

I've recently upgraded my computer, bought Microsoft Sculpt Comfort Keyboard and installed Windows 8.1 x64.

I also installed Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center v.2.2, that's offered on the Microsoft Hardware website.

The keyboard works like a charm, but Mouse and Keyboard Center doesn't recognize it.

There's a driver for keyboard in device manager called "Microsoft USB Dual Receiver Wireless Keyboard (Mouse and Keyboard Center)", and there's also a mouse driver called "Microsoft USB Dual Receiver Wireless Mouse (Mouse and Keyboard Center)", though I don't have any wireless mice. There are also two devices under HID devices group, "Microsoft hardware - USB-keyboard" and "Microsoft hardware - USB-mouse". Disabling those mouse drivers doesn't help.

What's wrong and how can I make Mouse and Keyboard Center see my Sculpt Comfort Keyboard?

Have just had one delivered today and same problem. (Win8.1). The only paper instructions showed pictures of activating the batteries, plugin the transmitter and off we go. No mention of installing drivers before inserting transmitter.

As noted earlier, the Desktop & Mouse Center do not appear to support this model. http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/help/windows-8/troubleshooting/mouse/supported-devices

I also have an Arc mouse which is the only device showing.

Is this likely to be fixed, or have I bought a dud?

It's one of their new, top of the line keyboards also; that is what makes me angry.

Did you follow the installation instructions to the letter? I do not know if it still is the case, but originally installation required installing the software and drivers first, using your old keyboard and mouse hardware, and rebooting before plugging in the USB device.

Please post screenshots of both your Device manager and Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center, as above.  This might help to determine what went wrong.  If you plugged in the USB device before installing the drivers and Mouse and Keyboard Center, this potentially could be the source of your troubles.  Also, make sure you are an administrative user when connecting the hardware.

Microsoft has released newer versions of that keyboard and mouse.  Any older versions of the keyboard on the market, after revision, are pretty well on their own.  There is something else that you could have checked, though.

When you install these wireless keyboards you need to use your regular USB keyboard to do it.  You install the software first, reboot, and then plug in the USB receiver.  Wait until the device is detected and the driver is configured.  Finally, after all this is complete, you remove the older keyboard and mouse.

You also need to be sure that it is plugged into a USB port that is the main USB hub in the machine, usually the bottom-most two next to the Ethernet port (but your machine may vary).

I had a similar problem with a supported keyboard on both Mac OS X and on Windows 8, which was fixed by following the above procedure.
