Error: 0x80073712 when installing KB 2919355

This error might mean that a file needed by Windows Update is damaged or missing. Here are a few steps that have solved the error for other community members:

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.

(If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Search.)

  1. Enter command prompt in the search box.
  2. In the list of results, swipe down on or right-click Command Prompt, and then tap or click Run as administrator.
  3. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, enter the following commands. Press the Enter key after each command.

If you're running a 64-bit version of Windows 8.1, type:

dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14

If you're running a 32-bit version of Windows 8.1, type:

dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.3.1.14

If you're running Windows RT 8.1, type:

dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~arm~~6.3.1.14

  1. Type the following command, and then press Enter:

dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth 2. Type the following command, and then press Enter:

dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup

  1. Install the Windows 8.1 Update from the download center.

 Windows 8.1 Update (32-bit version)

 Windows 8.1 Update (64-bit version)

If you have followed these steps and you still receive error 0x80073712, log files may need to be collected and reviewed. Please contact Microsoft Support so that we can further investigate your issue.

RH6M6,

I saw the kb2969339 update come through this morning a good 6 hours before the normal patch Tuesday updates were to be released and thought it was strange. Applied it to the final computer tonight and ran Windows Update. KB2919355 went right through and installed and the rest of the updates are now being installed. Hope this solution works for others.  Thanks.

    The first part is correct... generic keys are to be used for the install media.

    However, if the installer asks you for a product key, then it's not pulling the key from the bios, and will require you to go to PC Settings - Activateand enter the product key that came on the COA (which should be stuck somewhere on your computer) once Windows boots up after the install.  As long as the computer name remains the same, my experience with repair installs has been that windows will activate without requiring you to type your activation key. You will still need to go to PC Settings - Activate, but it will activate within seconds of clicking it.

    In theory, since 8.1 is free and does not have it's own line of activation keys, the installer should pull the OEM Volume License Key and not request a product key from you.  Since Microsoft has never offered an update to an OS that is for all intents a purposes a brand new OS [8.1], I simply don't know.

    The eleven patches that don't show up until after 2919355 is installed and the system restarted.  I no longer have an update history to verify what the 11 patches were due to clearing the windows update cache and removing directories, however there are 11 and the only way they become available is by having 2919355 installed

    EDIT:

    It was brought to my attention that these 11 patches that only show up after 2919355 may benon security updates that get offered up that would not be needed on a non KB2919355 system and not offered on a non KB2919355 system. Due to deleting the Windows Update cache, I no longer have an update history that shows these 11 patches and am unable to provide the KB #'s.

    However, the question about which 11 are offered after 2919355 is a very good question, and I thought it was worth the time to do another repair install so I could provide the information many have been requesting.  I will post the KB #'s once I finish everything to do with the repair install.
