I am trying to update a computer for someone that is Windows 8. I was able to download the update file, then I had to restart the computer for it to update. Upon restarting it, it got to 82% and seems stuck there. I have tried looking around and see that this is a common problem. Are there any solutions to this?

I was experiencing the same problem updating on an Asus laptop. I unplugged the charger and it instantly started going up after being on 82% for an hour. It then continued all the way up to 100% and restarted.
If you have a laptop and are experiencing this problem, just try the above.

To upgrade the operating system to Windows 8.1 without any issues, do the following steps and then check if the installation proceeds.
**Step 1:**Disconnect all the unnecessary external devices connected to the computer (except the mouse and the keyboard).
**Step 2:**If you are using any third-party antivirus software, you may uninstall it and check if you can upgrade to Windows 8.1.
Note: Even if you disable third party antivirus, Defender will still be running in the computer. This will guard your computer from malware and virus.
**Step 3:**Install all the available updates.
**Step 4:**Install the updated drivers for the hardware.
Step 5: Perform clean boot and then start the upgrade.

I also unplugged my power cord on my HP laptop and I can't believe it worked! It was stuck at 82% for an hour and a half!
I wonder what unplugging it does to jump start something because when I did I just heard a strong "whirr" sound of something starting up.
When I disconnected the charger, the power shut down. When I turned on the laptop again, now I have a message, "Restoring your previous version of Windows..." with the damned little circle of dots spinning.
How long does it take to get back to 8.0???
I've been working on this all morning!
It seems that a lot of people are stuck at 82% yes so am I and no I have not found any way of getting pass the hold up at 82%.
Looking back over the help on this matter no one has a answer? What I cannot believe or understand is why the Microsoft Team have not posted a answer or even sorted out a update to this problem that so many are having.
One thing I found a bit strange is that this is happiness to a lot of people with Acer laptop? Me as well. Is this a problem to do with Acer update from Windows 8 to 8.1?
I have been on the dreaded 82% for about an hour this time 3 times I have tried this update today, it has just rocketed to 99%.
So may be it's just a waiting game and something more to do with down load speeds.
So it's pull the power plug, hit the arrow keys, or just simple wait.
Lol yes wait like now stuck at 99% half an hour so far, I just going to sleep and let it do what ever it wants to fed up waiting.
