I am trying to update a computer for someone that is Windows 8. I was able to download the update file, then I had to restart the computer for it to update. Upon restarting it, it got to 82% and seems stuck there. I have tried looking around and see that this is a common problem. Are there any solutions to this?

I was experiencing the same problem updating on an Asus laptop. I unplugged the charger and it instantly started going up after being on 82% for an hour. It then continued all the way up to 100% and restarted.
If you have a laptop and are experiencing this problem, just try the above.

To upgrade the operating system to Windows 8.1 without any issues, do the following steps and then check if the installation proceeds.
**Step 1:**Disconnect all the unnecessary external devices connected to the computer (except the mouse and the keyboard).
**Step 2:**If you are using any third-party antivirus software, you may uninstall it and check if you can upgrade to Windows 8.1.
Note: Even if you disable third party antivirus, Defender will still be running in the computer. This will guard your computer from malware and virus.
**Step 3:**Install all the available updates.
**Step 4:**Install the updated drivers for the hardware.
Step 5: Perform clean boot and then start the upgrade.

I also unplugged my power cord on my HP laptop and I can't believe it worked! It was stuck at 82% for an hour and a half!
I wonder what unplugging it does to jump start something because when I did I just heard a strong "whirr" sound of something starting up.
I also have an Asus stuck at 82% but unplugging the charger didn't work.
So god dam sick of this ****, microsoft love using your OS but dam u all to hell for the stress your upgrade is causing me. i have been trying all the directions for five hours. its now 1am uk time, you can clearly see this is a ongoing common issue but no answer to it, no patch to fix it. hell not even a warning befor trying to upgrade to 8.1 about this as a possible issue.
you have a duty of care, why do you insist on the end user doing all the running around to solve your problems.

so now its 11:25 the next night 08/07/2015 nearly 22 hours later and still not able to install 8.1 , I give up, its a brand new out of the box laptop only thing done is fully updated all updates, inc the updates for apps and 8.1 still wont pass 82% setup.
its being sent back had enough stress and disappointment trying to upgrade to 8.1.
guess this is how vista ppl felt. you know the sad thing is I know for a fact i could go get an illegal torrent of windows 8.1 and it would have been installed up and running 20 hours ago but i was trying to do things the right legal way. how stupid am I. so thank you Microsoft (A) for saving me money full refund for laptop. & (B) showing me not to buy anymore of your products, was looking forward to cortana and xbox, pc, laptop and mobile all united but ill pass and stay with android and chrombook at least i know there **** but not a headache like this.
