Windows 8 / 8.1 - Num Lock on startup screen

Hi,

When I start up my pc and get to the screen where I need to enter my password, sometimes the NumLock key is activated, sometimes it isn't. This is really random.

I have the same problem on 2 different pc's, one win 8 and the other win 8.1

I think I found a solution that works permanently:

It is also a change in the register but not the one I have read in most posts.

  • You go to the register
  • Open HKEY USERS
  • Open Default
  • Open Control Panel
  • Click on Keyboard
  • On the right side you get 4 keyboard items
  • InitialKeyboardIndicators has a number as data > 2147483648
  • Doubleclick on InitialKeyboardIndicators
  • In the small window you get you change the last 2 numbers from 48 to 50 and get 2147483650
  • Click on ok
  • Close the register window
  • Try again

I have been trying now for more than 10 times and it keeps coming up on time for the login screen no matter if it is a cold start or a restart... I hope it will last :-)

    You should also disable Fast Startup if you want this to work after a cold boot ;]

    Windows 10 has the same problem.

    Microsoft is it really that difficult to enable the numlock BY DEFAULT???????????

    I found disabling Fast Startup worked well.

    Messing with the Registry is for experts, not intermediate users like me.

    I noticed the difference between numlock off when turning the PC on after it was off altogether, and numlock on after a restart.  That is what I understand hot and cold boots to mean.  It is very frustrating because I use a numerical log-on.  What is more frustrating is that neither MS or Dell takes responsibility.  And regardless of how often I hit or hold F2 at boot, I am not taken to Setup.  That is very annoying, too.

    Hi all. I just wanted to make sure everyone knew the difference between changing HKEY_CURRENT_USER and changing HKEY_USERS. They are very different beasts! Since it appeared that you all were looking for the same thing as me(NumLk on at all times, from boot to shut-down) I figured I would clear it up, in case you were just as confused as I was at first.

    I will start with the one I think we’re all looking for - HKEY_USERS: **1.**Press the flying Windows key+R on your keyboard to open the Run window. **2.**Type regedit in the Open text box and press Enter to open the Windows Registry editor.(click the Yes button if User Account Control dialogue window opens) **3.**In Registry, open the following folders: **>HKEY_USERS >.DEFAULT >Control Panel >Keyboard  4.**In the right colomn, double-click “InitialKeyboardIndicators” **5.**Change the last 2 #s from 48 to 50 (from 2147483648 to 2147483650) **6.**Close the register window & try logging on again.

    And finally - HKEY_CURRENT_USER: **1.**Press the flying Windows key+R on your keyboard to open the Run window **2.**Type regedit in the Open text box and press Enter to open the Windows Registry editor(click the Yes button if the User Account Control dialogue window opens) **3.**In Registry, open the following folders: **>HKEY_CURRENT_USER  >Control Panel  >Keyboard 4.**In the right colomn, double-click “InitialKeyboardIndicators” and change the # to either: 0 =NumLk is turned OFF after the logon(once you logon NumLk is no longer on & has to be switched back on) 1 =NumLk is Disable(must be manually turned on at logon & after) 2 =NumLk is turned ON after the logon(if password has numbers, NumLk must be turned on to use the keypad) **5.**Close the register window & try logging on again.

    I hope this helps & clears up some of the confusion. Just remember, either just HKEY_USERS(for ALL time) or HKEY_CURRENT_USER(either 0, 1, or 2). Take care!  ;-D   Missi  <3
