Windows 8 / 8.1 - Num Lock on startup screen

Hi,

When I start up my pc and get to the screen where I need to enter my password, sometimes the NumLock key is activated, sometimes it isn't. This is really random.

I have the same problem on 2 different pc's, one win 8 and the other win 8.1

I think I found a solution that works permanently:

It is also a change in the register but not the one I have read in most posts.

  • You go to the register
  • Open HKEY USERS
  • Open Default
  • Open Control Panel
  • Click on Keyboard
  • On the right side you get 4 keyboard items
  • InitialKeyboardIndicators has a number as data > 2147483648
  • Doubleclick on InitialKeyboardIndicators
  • In the small window you get you change the last 2 numbers from 48 to 50 and get 2147483650
  • Click on ok
  • Close the register window
  • Try again

I have been trying now for more than 10 times and it keeps coming up on time for the login screen no matter if it is a cold start or a restart... I hope it will last :-)

    Why they have to blame the manufacturers (plural), is beyond me. What I can't understand is the lack of BIOS controlled Num-Lock setting. Either way, they SHOULD be offering a fix for ALL effected systems and users. PERIOD.

    With so many users and so many DIFFERENT manufacturers involved, it doesn't seem reasonable that it is a manufacturer or "hardware" problem. Microsoft has NOT been able to create a "problem free" operating system, no matter how hard they have tried. I also think it is completely IRRESPONSIBLE to pass the blame for a fault that is only consistent with THEIR operating system. I'm QUITE sure that with a little EFFORT on their part, they could "patch" or fix this very easily. There is a lot to be said about their customer supports and feedback system when this problem has been ongoing for a few YEARS.

     I just purchased a new machine with Windows 8.1 installed and have already gotten frustrated enough to want to SMASH the machine and go buy a MAC. (You NEVER hear such problems with those systems, but then again, they aren't as "cheap")

     Microsoft NEEDS each an everyone of us. to support their wallets, so if we all make enough of a fuss, new potential customers will look at other options... and they will have no choice but to fix these annoyances.

     I also hear that Windows 10 is just around the corner, and has a much more user friendly 'User Interface', but we'll just have to wait and see. I'm not holding my breath, but am eager to upgrade this '****' for something hopefully better.....

    I'd really prefer not to do a registry update for this. I'm surprised Microsoft hasn't given some input on this.
