I have a Samson C01U USB mic. It is a plug-and-play microphone. There are no drivers for it. There is no firmware for it. You just plug it in, and it works.
This mic has always worked perfectly. When I used Windows 7, I set the volume level of it to about 40-50% and everything sounded crisp, clear, and loud. On Windows 8, it is inaudible unless I set the volume to 90% but even at that point it is not loud enough. Setting it to 100% results in a lot of noise in the background.
This is not the first time someone has brought this issue up as it is extremely common to everyone owning a USB plug-and-play mic:

Thank you for the reply.
As you have mentioned that you have checked the issue with other microphone but you still face this issue. We have already tried to uninstall and reinstall the drivers. I suspect this issue to be a hardware issue. Check the issue with a local technician.
Just tried RoyG6 his solution. Here are my results. If I am inside the application I am able to control the mic level. But as soon as you go into another application, the volume resets itself back to extremely low again. So if you record something short inside the Samson application no worries everything works. But if you go to a different application we still are stuck with the same problem....
Let's keep searching for a solution and share what we find!

Bad news sadly also not working on Windows 10, on Windows 7 however it works perfect..... Well no Windows 10 for me I guess. Just posted this so you knew and don't upgrade for nothing.....
I contracted Samson for a solution and this was the reply. I haven't tried it yet...
Thank you for contacting Samson Technologies and for your interest in the C01U. Unfortunately, the Windows 8 issue with low levels has been a constant issue that effects all USB audio devices that Microsoft has refused to address
We have a solution that may work that involves an override of the Windows driver:
Please go to the following web page and unplug your microphone
http://www.samsontech.com/samson/products/microphones/usb-microphones/gomicdirect/
-then scroll down and select the downloads and manuals tab
-Click on “Sound Deck Software for Windows”
-Run the software install
-Restart your computer
-Plug the Microphone back in
Once installed you will see a blue S Icon in your task bar(bottom right of the screen), click on that as you may need it to control levels
