Getting error code 0x800701E3 when copying files from laptop to external hard disk

I believe that is true I don't think what I thought I accidently moved did not..Did some research after I posted to you. Tried to move that app data back and would not let me..Since then rebooted and all seems fine.

Since I do not knpw the best way to explain the file structure other than in win 7 terms. Remember in win 7 had a name for your pc we will call it xxxpc. Then when you opened the window in the lower left, still in win 7 terminology, at the top was xxxpc opened that folder and in it was folders, downloads,music videos,pictures..etc..then below that screen was public documents..Still ther in win 10 on desktop..but gone in pc. Now open that folder.only was to get to it is c->.Users->and there is xxxpc but the file name is not the same as the name on pc and cannot rename. Also this is no longer on the desktop(I realize that I can drag to desk top and create a short cut), but only way to get to it is thr the c drive,,In short appears the pc does not recognize the file and its defaults any longer, appears the users file no longer exists.....under destop it no longer exist...Basically the default pc name-file folder for all the defaults of music,favorites,downloads,videos..etc don't exist.

Data used to go to these defaults now I have to tell it where to go, so for now created a desktop folder till can get this default back..

How post a screen print on here have tried snippet and copy and paste..

Your own files are all within subfolders of C:\Users*Y* ourUserName.  They are in

• C:\Users*Y* ourUserName\Documents
• C:\Users*Y* ourUserName\Desktop
• C:\Users*Y* ourUserName\Music
• C:\Users*Y* ourUserName\Pictures
• C:\Users*Y* ourUserName\Videos}.

That is where they have always been.

File explorer can show you those folders in what it thinks is a more convenient manner where they are the first things under the computer name but that is simply a means of presentation - the files are still in C:\Users*Y* ourUserName... all the time.  It is possible to turn off this way of displaying them and that might be all that you have done.

• It's the diagram that has the bits concerned highlighted in yellow.
• Underneath that are a pair of diagrams showing what File explorer looks like if you change a setting.

Have you changed that setting and are merely confused by the difference in presentation?

I had not seen your last post [starting I need to take a step back here I have trying to do too many things,issues ...].  I was writing my post at the time.

There is a folder C:\Users*YourUserName*\AppData and it does have the subfolders you mention [Local, LocalLow, Roaming].  That is the correct place for it.  It was never at C:\AppData or anywhere else.  AppData is a hidden folder so you may not always see it [you can set File explorer to show hidden folders & files].

SFC will not address this issue.  It only checks the integrity of a set of Windows system files.  No more than that.

What do you mean, "The file structure and layout had been wrong for awhile"?

The only way to restore file structures to what they ought to be is to run a "Repair install" procedure or to do a clean [complete] reinstallation of Windows & all your applications.  A Repair install is when you run the installation USB/DVD within Windows [instead of by booting from it, which would reinstall Windows instead].  A reinstallation would require you to back up all your own files first as everything on the disk would get overwritten. 

What was the issue that made you "restore"?  And what exactly do you mean by "restore" as there are several things that might be called that.  Do you mean you ran a "System restore" at System, System protection, System restore?  If so, that is also a very limited measure and it will have no effect on folder structures.

If you have managed to move folders then Windows cannot think they were critical ones or it would not have allowed you to do it.

Defrag does not restructure any folders either.  It does not help with such a problem.

Perhaps a complete reinstallation is the best way forward.

Step back with me I don't care about the issue of the xhdd right now so which r u addressing above ?? Right now is to get the file structure back so is the defrag reply addressing tht issue ??,  familiar with that but how is that going to put a file back to where it belongs ?? My understanding of it is that it would not only a space allocation tool.

If defrag was the answer to this defrag auto on and shows all drives 0 % fragmented, would not run already optimized..So the file structure back to the way it was retore ?/ Did nt work before ..
