ERROR 0x80070490 : MpSigStubMain - Windows Defender Updates

I'm seeing a similar problem - last raft of windows updates for my win8.1 x64 machine, everything works fine except the definition update for defender. I've tried downloading the definition update directly and ran the mpas-fex64.exe, which simply returns, no messages, but update still fails. Here's the mpsig* information showing defender's got some dll's out of sync. My guess is this has been failing for awhile. Any way to repair it short of a reinstall?

Yes, you can try deleting that file, it'll rebuild, but rename instead of deleting. And you can try changing registry value to MpScanCache-0.bin, instead of MpScanCache-1.bin. Registry Editor will not be able to change the value (permission problems), so you have to open Registry Editor with the method I discussed in answer to this thread:

Still no luck. Tried to refresh - got through the process only to have it reboot and say, "There was a problem refreshing your PC. No changes made." Clicked on 'more information', got the 'checking for solution' then nothing.

Any ideas where it might log the problem? Tried this twice, no luck. Am I down to, "I need to wipe the machine and reinstall in order to get it working again so that Windows Update can successfully refresh Windows Defender in order to prevent viruses on this computer that actually hasn't ever had any?"

Or, is there a better option? Like, maybe, a way to update the virus definitions without all this rigamarole? I mean, really, do I have to reinstall to just enable buggy virus definition software that's unfortunately part of the O/S to be updateable by other buggy update software? How do you ship updates that fail to install and not immediately revise them? I know you get reports of failed installs, are they investigated? Should I wait a few weeks and see if the next round of updates to the definition files work?

FWIW the full scan showed no issues, either, over 2million items scanned.

I will look into the refresh route. Frankly, I'm considering doing nothing as I can always run an offline scan if I have any concerns, and, sad to say, without the defender engine running all the time the computer is performing better. Seriously, though, there should be a way out of this without the refresh, that's a huge pain.

Uhh, thanks I guess. I will try offline defender first and see if it shows anything. I actually doubt it, I'm pretty cautious about what I run. Of course, it could be malware traveling with MS provided software, these things happen. Also, the basic inability to be able to download the updates and update the engine without the service running seems like a pretty bad design flaw. Some PM somewhere at MS likely punted a bug late in shiproom...

It is quite improbable that malware came along with anything provided from Microsoft that would cause the issue. I suspected the infection due to the nature of the error which suggests that something has shut down Defender and blocked your ability to apply the Defender updates with the 80070005 permissions error. It could also be corruption if you normally avoid things that could lead to an infection, hence the suggestion to consider the refresh/reset route.

The Defender service, updates, and your VS problem all lead me to think that the easiest solution is to reset and start fresh.
