I am running XP SP3, and when I go to the Windows update site and check for express updates, the green progress bard starts and just keeps going with no end result. I downloaded the Fixit Tool and it quoted the error code as above. How can I rectify this please?

    I have done all that but BITS still won't start. I just get the "1290: 0x50a" error message again.

    Is that all the message says? Just 1290: 0x50a?

    I have done that.  Only DelayedAutoStart was showing and has been deleted. On re-boot, BITS no longer appears in the Services! What next!

    I have ServicesSidType in the list. Should it be there? Also I found a BITS repair tool online and it is showing again, but gives me the same error message when I try to Start it.

    OK, provided BITS is showing, go to the Run command and copy/paste the following:

    Reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BITS\Parameters /v ServiceDll /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d %windir%\System32\qmgr.dll

    Reboot after you run this command because it makes changes to the registry.

    After the system boots to the desktop again, try and start BITS.

    If it fails regardless, copy/paste the following and then reboot again afterwards:

    Reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup
