I am running XP SP3, and when I go to the Windows update site and check for express updates, the green progress bard starts and just keeps going with no end result. I downloaded the Fixit Tool and it quoted the error code as above. How can I rectify this please?

I assume BITS should be set to Automatic mode?

I already did that but it's ok now. When I re-booted, the update installed and I now have BITS in my services. Thank you for all your help, but it does seem strange that this problem exists on my laptop and netbook too with no warning as the updates were working previously, so I have to sort those out too, but couldn't have done it without your help.

Thank you. I have done that and although I can't see BITS in the Services, all the updates dowloaded bar one as below.

It's telling you underneath what you have to do i.e. accept the EULA.
