Sorry, I assumed that you were in the USA. I am in the UK so, as you say, the time difference is not that much. I have done as you said and the files copied. I installed the MS Security Update ok and the system has ben inspected. I am now n the update site, it is checking for updates but there is no green progress bar. It has just come up with 71mb of updates to install, so I'll make a start on those and report back. Many many thanks for your help and patience. Now I have to do it all again oln my laptop. Hopefully it will be easier on there.
Error Code Ox80070057
I am running XP SP3, and when I go to the Windows update site and check for express updates, the green progress bard starts and just keeps going with no end result. I downloaded the Fixit Tool and it quoted the error code as above. How can I rectify this please?

2013-11-22T08:52:39+00:00 Re my last post, the problem stems from the fact that I did a search for qmgr.dll and it is only in my CWindows\sysem32 file. It is not in the ServicePackFile folder or the system32\bits folder.
Hi edzal,
I live in the Netherlands. If you live in the US, then time zones are going to play a role here, hence the delay in responding to you.
If you only have BITS in one location and you don't have a Windows installation CD, do the following.
Open C:\WINDOWS\system32 in Windows Explorer, right click qmgr.dll and choose Copy.
Open C:\WINDOWS\system32\bits right click anywhere in that folder and choose Paste. You should now be able to see qmgr.dll in that folder.
Go to Start, Run and copy/paste: regsvr32 qmgr.dll and click OK
Do the same with this file: regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
Reboot the system and then copy/paste this command into the Run field:
%windir%\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\inf\qmgr.inf
If you're prompted to insert the Windows installation CD, ignore that and in the dialog box at the bottom, change the path to C:\WINDOWS\system32
Restart the PC again and then go to Services and you should be able to see BITS in the list.
Double click it and then on the General tab, click the Start button to try and start the service manually. This is just a test to ensure that it's working correctly.
If you get Error 2: cannot find the file specified, go to Start, then Run again and copy/paste the following command and then click OK:
Reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BITS\Parameters /v ServiceDll /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d %windir%\System32\qmgr.dll
Reboot again and then try once more to start BITS. It should work properly now, but in the unlikely event that it fails again, run the following command and then hit Enter:
Reg add HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup
Reboot once more and then do the following.
Go to this link and install the IE8 cumulative November update:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=41074
Finally, go to the Windows Update site and you should be able to download normally.

2013-11-22T07:32:59+00:00 Ok. Those updates are not there because that is what my problem is. I haven't been able to receive updates since I have had this problem. But I think I may havea solution. You asked me to change the source of the files needed for copying to C\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386. Well, I thought it may be a good idea to have a look at that file to see what was in it, and the only item in it was a Fax Cover Editor! So, maybe, if you could tell me which files should be copied, I can have a look and see where they reside. And I have now recovered BITS.

[1] Injudicious use of registry cleaners may be playing a role here. TIP: If you ever again think your Registry needs to be cleaned, repaired, boosted, tuned-up, cured, tweaked, fixed, maximized, "swept" or optimised (it doesn't), read http://chris.pirillo.com/are-registry-cleaners-safe-to-use/ and/or http://www.edbott.com/weblog/2005/04/why-i-dont-use-registry-cleaners/ then draw your own conclusions.
