Windows Defender in Windows 8.1 Will Not Turn On

I recently updated Windows 8 to Windows 8.1.  Windows Defender had been on in Windows 8 and even after the update to 8.1.  I turned it off momentarily but have been unable to turn it back on.  To my knowledge, I have no other anti-virus programs running.  How can I turn it back on?

Since you have a 3 year McAfee subscription, you should be seeking assistance from McAfee (or Dell) support. With McAfee installed, Defender will be off.

Thanks Steve. On further investigation with system info the report showed that the SATA drive (932 GB) at 0,0, failed and that the SSD (30GB) was OK. I worked my through Dell's built in pre-boot diagnostic screens under guidance from Dell tech support person (phone) and a full system reset was needed. All is OK now, but I still dont know why the SATA drive reported failure when it was clearly OK - so far anyway!
