Windows 8.1: WiFi dropping and/or "Limited"

I just had an IT guy in to check out why I only get limited access on my Dell Inspiron 7000 in a hotel I have moved into. He travels the world with his laptop and has the same issues in most hotels. It is a Microsoft issue and it is time Microsoft dealt with it.

i had tried everything...even the stuff in the link you provided.  however, disabling the heustrics and autotuning is what finally fixed the connectivity issue for me.   don't really know why this worked...but suspect some sort tcp/ip tuning issue with windows 8.1 and my gateway.    funny enough i am planning on selling this particular laptop, and when i reloaded windows 8.1 to clear up the personal files, the problem returned again, until i disabled those two items again.

It is important to leave those settins as they are. Changing them from the default could lead to issues in the future. THese age good steps to try first http://www.vindamedia.com/windows/help/troubleshooting-your-network

Another thing is that new router with dual band 5 ghz radio signals are not meant for far distances and to penetrate through solid objects. The 2.4 ghs is preferred for home. Most of the slower rated speeds in the 5 ghz are actually faster then the slower 2,4 ghz because of the larger wave length of the higher radio signall. Another issue that can cause things to break in the ipv6 and IPv4. If your  ISP or anything on your network can't can handle the newer ipV65 then you can experience issues with dropped connections

What will you do if:

• Old router  G + N 150Mbs
• Old TV  G
• Old Printer  G
• smartphone G + N
• Your new computer N + W10

• hardware driver, this is a decision? or not ?

Again, the system will be guilty  :-)

EX: If one milion "go to" it is time for W11 :-)

I don't exactly understand your point, Microstuff_8.1 Was it maybe that W10 that was suggested by  ccicarl already before launch has become an unviable upgrade strategy for fixing this??? So that W11 may be the fix to W10 ?

OK, ALL my other devices of different brands at home work nicely on my new Asus RT-AC66U router - EXCEPT my old Dell that I fitted with a new Intel AC7260 adapter. Bought the AC router and card after the very unfortunate FREE upgrade of my Win 8.0 to 8.1 that failed and that I have regretted as a dog ever since and put hundred+hours into trying to fix without luck.

JUST DON'T DO IT is my only advice - or maybe wait till W11 if I understand your advice (?)

The router works with the hardware driver.

Point 1 and 2 is supported by the driver, never the system 8.1.

Point 3 is 90% of the manual setting, but Intel does it himself.

It works since the INTEL. Because driver compatible.

to those of you still having issues, if you haven't tried the following...give it a try.  i worked for me on my toshiba L70 8.1 machine with atheros ar956x wireless adapter.

TCP/IP Stack Reset

open admin command prompt and type the following:

netsh int ip reset C:\resetlog.log

restart the computer/laptop

Disabling TCP/IP Autotuning

disable the TCP/IP autotuning.   Open admin command prompt and run the following commands one by one:

netsh int tcp set heuristics disabled

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

netsh int tcp set global rss=enabled
