Windows 8.1: WiFi dropping and/or "Limited"

Finally gave up.

After months of monitoring this thread, contributing to the discussions myself, and reading everything there was to read about this issue. I decided to try to upgrade to the new Windows 10. When that failed to do anything more than crash at boot, I gave up!

Windows is a thing of the past. The computer I bought just for Windows 8 is now running Ubuntu.

Microsoft, you did this to us too many times. Windows 98 was fine. Windows ME was abysmal. Windows XP rocked while Windows Vista couldn't be bothered to work. Windows 7 did the trick, while Windows 8 broke my computers.

I will not be buying another computer packaged with Windows until the OS is proven to work and tested by industry experts. Until then, Linux is the way to go, with (heaven) Apple products coming in second.

I'm a technical guy, and people ask me for buying advise on their machines. From here on out, unless they're a gamer or a power user, I'm advising Chrome OS.

See you in a few years, Microsoft. Or not...

I had the exact same issues as you got, and after a lot of research i finally got it, just went to the lenovo y510p official site and install newest wifi driver for Windows 8.1 64 bit, and it was solved!! :)

I can now confirm that driver update did not solve the issue but I think I've found the root cause in my case, which seems to be TweetDeck. While TweetDeck is running my wifi connection drops randomly, I just confirmed that a few times quitting TweetDeck and restarting it.

SOLUTION: CHANGE THE WIFI CHANNEL TO A CONSISTENT CHANNEL! Sharing in case anyone else is experiencing this issue with an Apple AirPort Express and a Windows8 machine not staying connected to the WIFI. So I had that WIFI problem where my Windows 8.1 Lenovo X1 Carbon not staying connected to WIFI at home for longer than 10 minutes? And my VPN was not working at home? Turns out - this is what I learned:

At home, I have at least 10 APPLE devices that all stay connected to my Apple AirPort Express without issue. Windows 8.1 - not at all.

My husband was talking with one of his colleagues and we learned that the problem is: Apple routers are programmed to change channel automatically when they see a lot of traffic on the system - and Apple devices know this - and know to follow the protocol (when I have all 10 devices whirring away, I guess it feels stressed out). Windows devices do not do this automatically and use a different protocol. So, my solution: change the WIFI channel to a consistent channel - and don't let it automatically change. Tah-dah! Works like a charm. Here's how.

I did what you recommend here about a month ago and it seemed to help then the problem started again. My internet provider gave me a new modem and everything worked fine again. Well, the problem is back and I could not stay on the internet long enough to change one page.  I ran across your post and decided to give it another try. Mine was already unchecked. However I noticed under the "sharing" tab it now had "Allow other network users to control or disable the shared internet connection"  checked. I unchecked that and my internet/computer are working great again. I am the only person in the household using this computer and have no idea how that ever got checked.
