Cursor Disappeared with Windows 8.1 Update!

Hello,

I recently upgraded my Lenovo Ideapad y500 to windows 8.1 "update" and my cursor disappears every time my computer boots to the start screen. I have not had this problem with the regular 8.1. I tried re-installing my touchpad driver and that did not work. I tried troubleshooting and that did not work. I tinkered with the mouse settings in the control panel and that also didn't work. I am running out of time and patience, finals is in a couple weeks and I need my computer to work! please help me guys!

Hey Lynn,

042nrogera4 Earlier posted a solution to this problem which apparently works ( I havent tried it as the problem for me just dissappeared after I made a large number of changes to my system to resolve other issues)

Anyway the proposed solution is to edit one registry item. Here is how you do it:

1) From the desktop right-click on the start icon and then click 'Run'

In the Run box type in 'regedit' without the quote marks and click OK
this will open Windows Registry Editor, now navigate to this path by clicking on the folders in the left hand panel: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
Once you have opened the system folder you should look down the list that appears in the main box to the right of the panel until you find an entry called EnableCursorSupression double click this entry
This will bring up a box that has a value data of 1. Change this to 0 and click OK

6)Close the registry Editor and restart your computer

I had this problem too, I connected my lenovo y500 to a tv with hdmi and when i plugged the hdmi out the cursor was gone. Tried to restart and then an update came and the cursor was still not there. After an hour of testing I found something that worked for me, pressing ctrl, alt, delete. Then the cursor appeared for me!

It's not the same manufacturer as your own machine, but there's likely to be a similar function key which does the same thing on your own laptop.

Unfortunately, you were not responsive.

Toshiba has an Extra-cost service, $70.00 that fixed the problem in less than 2 minutes.

APPARENTLY, THIS IS A WELL KNOWN PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They have had thousands and thousands of these fixes. They apologized for having to charge the minimum fee for such a fix.

MICROSOFT sent out 2 corrupted registry files. Great work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They said you have known about this issue at least since 5/20. That is when they sent MICROSOFT communication asking MICROSOFT to send an update to Windows to correct your error.

So you have a known error, you do not fix it and you make no response on the forum. This is terrible service.

This is a disgrace.

How do I bill you for you unwillingness to fix your own errors??????

Thanks for the response.

To be clear, I have 2 problems. The cursor disappears and the physical keyboard ceases functioning. This happened after a Microsoft windows update last week. When I restore to and earlier restore point, in my case, 5/13/15, the keyboard functions perfectly and the cursor reappears.

I will attempt to find a USB keyboard to test that. I will keep you informed.

However, the physical keyboard on the Toshiba E45t laptop is obviously functioning properly since it operates perfectly after I go to an earlier restore point.

I have called Toshiba support. They have numerous other reports of the same issue but since they only provide hardware support, they had no suggestions and recommended contacting Microsoft.

The only change is the Windows update.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. While the virtual keyboard is working, effectively, the computer is of little use unless these things can be fixed, or a subsequent Windows update corrects.
