How do I disable Automatic Update for Windows Update

I just bought a Surface RT, and updated to 8.1. My PC says it's set to automatically update, and it's not providing me with any obvious way to disable automatic updates.

Automatic updates for a computer's operating system have proven irritating and problematic for me in the past, and I would like to avoid that headache if at all possible.

Please for the love of God tell me I can disable automatic updates.

I have been reading a lot of posts on here...

Basically, Microsoft support will only post what there told to post.

This is how you turn Auto Updates on or off on Windows RT.

  1. Hit the Windows button.
  2. Type view local services and click it.
  3. Find Windows update and right click Startup Type.
  4. Go to Properties, you'll see Startup type again.

5. Click disable and apply.

Turn it on in the same way.

" I will bust my RT back to 8 "

    I have seen no other reports of this problem so this is just related to your device.

    The system file checker is an easy tool to use to check if important  system files are intact.

    Very glad the problem is resolved for you.

    I understand how frustrating this can be. Getting the optional KB3033055 installed first is the solution.

    Enjoy your new to you RT.

    tip

    Go to the control panel, internet options, programs tab, chose how you open links. From the dropdown select 'always in internet explorer on the desktop' and check the box below the dropdown if you do not want to use the metro style browser.

    Thank you. I have been able to get all of my updates from 2014 until current installed on my device. I installed them by the year that they were issued. It was a long process but I feel that by installing each year separately the updates were able to get put into the unit correctly. I installed that optional one as you suggested. I hope that this will have resolved my issue of the black screen. I would hate to have to go back to factory specs again and start my updates from 2014 again.

    This problem started in January with

    2018-01 (Jan) Security Monthly Quality Rollup  for ARM based Systems KB4056895

    and continues with:

    2018-02 (Feb) Security Monthly Quality Rollup KB4074594  and

    2018-03 (Mar) Security Monthly Quality Rollup KB4088876

    Expect future Security Monthly Quality Rollups to do the same until this problem is fixed.

    If any of those devices did not have KB3033055 installed and it is installed now on  an updated system they will boot to a black screen when the system is restarted following the this update. Users blamed KB3033055 for this problem which is not the case.

    This is a universal issue with the Surface RT and Surface 2

    KB3033055 is not presented as an important update, it is optional.

    Most of the user problems with this update conflict were reported in the Surface category, Surface RT product and started in January.
