"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

So is this really how it is going to be? Now that the new 8.1 upgrade is available, it is only available if you have already updated to 8.1.

I have waited for the new 8.1 update to fix my original 8.1 update problem, but now it seems that this is not the case.

So how do I get Windows 8.1 running on my almost brand new very typical desktop computer?

It has been over 6 months already and there is no solution.

    Any help from MS?

I finally got 8.1 to update this weekend.  The only thing different I did was uninstall classic shell from my system before attempting to update.  I'm not sure if that program was blocking the install or not.

If you have avast premier installed, uninstall it & try. This worked for me.

    Hi!

    i recieved this code

    [0xC1900101

as the thread says. I remvoed a usb wlan card after the first fail. After removing my realtek USB wireless lan card it worked. BUT, it's not usable in windows 8.1 so far, i haven't updated anything in 8.1 now but as soon as i insert it a big fat blue screen pops up. But i guess its a compatible issue. tho i cannot change the drivers of it since it pops up as soon as it gets stuck in and tries to install it.

Hope this helps someone in this thread trying to install windows 8.1 with a WLAN device inside your computer.
