"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store but cannot get it to install. Each time I try, I get to the point where it is "getting my devices ready", then the PC restarts to a blue screen with error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, then restores Windows 8. When the system boots up after this, I get a message saying:

"Couldn't update to Windows 8.1

Sorry, we couldn't complete the update to Windows 8.1. We've restored your previous version of Windows to this PC.

0xC1900101 - 0x40017"

There is n o explanation as to why the update could be completed. Any ideas how to resolve this?

    My error ive fixed it, i down loaded firmware for ssd's secure erase. and now work's in raid.

    For now I can install IRT and windows 8.1 now

    Again updated bios and tried. Does not help. I've tried 20+ times with all tricks. I will not reinstall the whole operating system with all the software again. If that is needed, then I just discard windows and switch to Apple. 

    It has been 3 months - is Microsoft trying to do anything about this and is someone monitoring this tread? Let's all create a couple of other entries to this forum for the same problem, if that helps.

    Don't bother nothing is fix, atm.   Ive done everything. only thing left is to ring M$, never had to do this in my life.

    Really not worth it, have tried that and they don't know either. Have always purchased MS products because of their realiability but now I'm not so sure.

    Similar problem.

    HP ENVY 15 (e3s20ua#aba).  New.  Delivered with Windows 8.

    Getting 0xc1900101 - 0x40019

    Upgrade starts.  Reboots.  Percent count down to 40%, then black screen.

    Looks like video driver failure during the first boot.  Which is weird, because the first-time OS boot config should run in bare bones VGA 640x480 mode until it's ready.

    This version has Intel HD Graphics 4000 -- which should be ok with Win8.1.  Win8 version is dated March 19, 2013 and version 9.18.10.3071.

    BIOS F.24 (latest and for WIN8.1)

    Latest updates for Win8

    HP's support site it not working correctly at the moment, nor is their desktop Support Assistant.

    Is there any keystroke sequence I can use during one of the first boot sequences of Win8.1 to interrupt it to get the video mode stable to complete the installation?
