Buck,
Microsoft has just published a new article to try and resolve installation issues. It might help, so go through those steps first before reinstalling: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/install-latest-update-windows-8-1

Windows 8.1 Update for x64-based Systems (KB2919355)
Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 800F0922
System got to 89% then said it couldn't complete the updates and that it would back out the updates. 15 minutes later, I'm back where I started.
Is it possible windows defender or other virus scanner blocked this update?

Have you tried resizing your recovery partition? I know it's kinda risky as you mentioned, but it seems better to me than reinstalling Windows completely.
Tried again via Windows update this morning, same issue "Failure configuring windows updates"..etc. Guess I am screwed and will have to reinstall Windows, how tedious :(
I applied the new versions yesterday.
Worked for me.
(I also made sure my restore point storage was large and took a restore point before each patch, to be safer.)
Buck,
Restart the computer and then try installing the update again. This usually works where a small element in the file didn't configure properly.
