If you do not see the Windows 8.1 update in the Windows Store, here are some of the reasons.  You can find more details here on why you may not be seeing the Windows 8.1 update.

  1.  You may be running an edition of Windows 8 that doesn’t support the update from the Store.

   a. If you’re running Windows 8.1 Preview, here’s how to update to the final version.

   b. If you’re running Windows Enterprise Edition or Volume License version of Windows Pro.  You must speak to your system administer to learn how to update.

If you are not sure, the following steps will help you identify if you have a Volume License version of Windows:

  • Open the run dialog box by using the Windows Key + R
  • Type the following and press enter   slmgr.vbs /dli
  • You will see a window titled Windows Script Host.
  • On the first line you should see either “RETAIL channel” or “Volume Channel”

If it says something that resembles Volume, you won’t be able to get it through the store and will need to talk to your system administrator about their plans for rolling out this update based on the Volume License agreement through the

Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC).  If you are the system administrator or the person responsible for your company’s computers, you should refer to this article for information on how to upgrade.

  c. If you’re using a Multiple Activation Product Key through a Commercial or MSDN contact.   To install the update, you need to use media obtained through those programs.

  1. You have not installed all pending Windows Updates.  You can find details here on which update is needed to see the Windows 8.1 update.

If you are having issues with installing Windows Update we recommend you post for help with that issue.

You may also attempt an automated fix by running the Windows Update troubleshooter

  1. You need to sync your App License; you can do this by:
  • On the Start screen, tap or click Store to open the Windows Store.
  • Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Settings.

(If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Settings.)

  • Tap or click App updates
  • Tap or click Sync licenses
  1. The Windows Store Catalog is not refreshing correctly.

To refresh the catalog, try pressing the Windows and R key together to open the run box, type WSReset.exe and hit Enter.  Reboot and check the Windows Store again.

I have followed your suggestion of uninstalling update KB 2871389 and then checking for updates and reinstalled the update. It worked and Windows 8.1 appeared in Store. Thereafter I installed Windows 8.1 easily. Many thanks for the solution.

    Hi Bill,

I tried all the suggestions here and still have the same problem.  "KB2802618" keeps showing up in windows update and I keep installing it successfully.   Windows update fix did not work (it actually shows that I have a  problem for update installs.  Windows store reset did not work.   KB2871389 is not showing as an option to install or in the updates.     One thing to note.   Several months ago my apps on the start screen were stopped opening and working.   I tried everything to fix that but nothing worked so I had to do a repair using a store bought CD on my pre-loaded machine.   After the fix everything seems to be working just fine.. until this problem.. Not being able to update to 8.1.   Please continue to help..  PS.. this is not a volume license.

    Works!

Thanks for the help from Answers and BillFill.

Initially update not showing in Store.

I was able to easily upgrade to 8.1 from Windows Pro Preview with Media Center by using the alternate solution entering into my browser: ms-windows-store:WindowsUpgrade.  Update then showed in Store.  No problems and 8.1 is a delight.  Especially appreciate the new Reading List app.
