Hi,
I just updated to Windows 8.1 last night. All went fine. Once it had finished it booted to windows normally. I then decided to restart the computer just to make sure everything was okay and sorted.
It took me to the normal login screen. My Keyboard and Mouse didn't work?! I check all of my peripherals and non of the USB devices were working. I have tried multiple times to restart and try different USB's to no avail. I have tried a bog standard keyboard and mouse and even a PS2 slot keyboard and non of this has worked.
Any help on what I can do without losing all of my data?

I found a solution that worked for me. If you try this, hopefully it will work!

I have found a solution to the problem via a person from another forum with the same issue. All credit goes to him for finding this out. If you try what he says it should work fine. It did for me

I've been having similar difficulties for the past 3 weeks. I did not update from Win 8 but installed a new instance of 8.1. About 2 hours ago I moved the receiver from a 2.0 to a 3.0 USB slot and so far I have not had a single instance of the keyboard/mouse freezing up on me. This seems ridiculous as I am using a Microsoft Moue/Keyboard combo. My new motherboard only has 2 x USB 3.0 ports. Not happy that one of them needs to be occupied with the USB receiver. It seems the fix is to offer driver support for both 2.0 and 3.0, this should not be so cumbersome. I would recommend that anyone experiencing the same issues try to move the receiver to a 3.0 slot (if available).
Um... XHCI is USB 3.0. Do you still have high speed on your ports or all your devices fallback to 2.0?

Also, Windows 8.1, just like 7 and 8, should be able to update the drivers from the Internet. Maybe if you had a spare PS/2 mouse OR keyboard, or TeamViewer/another remote control software, you updated the USB Root Hub drivers that weren't working, so you would get 3.0 functionality back. Did you try anything like that? It could be worthy if the issue gets you back to EHCI era...

You're not the first. I still have a similar problem with my Blue Snowball microphone. The microsoft rep wanted $90 for premium support in order to help me. So yeah. I'm not impressed. I have an MSI motherboard and can't figure out how to disable my xHCI in the bios. Uninstalling from Device Manager seems not to work as Windows automatically re-installs it upon reboot (must think it's an essential service or something). I'M SO FRUSTRATED I MAY JUST SWITCH TO MAC huehuehue
