Windows 8.1 - Keyboard & Mouse Not Working

Hi,

I just updated to Windows 8.1 last night. All went fine. Once it had finished it booted to windows normally. I then decided to restart the computer just to make sure everything was okay and sorted.

It took me to the normal login screen. My Keyboard and Mouse didn't work?! I check all of my peripherals and non of the USB devices were working. I have tried multiple times to restart and try different USB's to no avail. I have tried a bog standard keyboard and mouse and even a PS2 slot keyboard and non of this has worked.

Any help on what I can do without losing all of my data?

**UPDATE**

I found a solution that worked for me. If you try this, hopefully it will work!

"Had the same thing happen to me when I upgraded from WIN 8.0 to 8.1. I found this solution that worked for me....Go into the advanced mode in the UEFI bios and disable Intel XHCI Mode. Once I did that and all my USB devices worked"

Hi guys,

I have found a solution to the problem via a person from another forum with the same issue. All credit goes to him for finding this out. If you try what he says it should work fine. It did for me

Hope it works for you all!

Same issue. Installed Win 8.1 from Win 8. Everything was fine until I rebooted, then no mouse or keyboard. In fact, no USB at all. None of the ports work. I tried to do a restore, but that did nothing.  My computer is custom  built, AMD chipset. Computer is fine as everything works in bios and I can load linux just fine. Something is wrong with Win 8.1 or some driver issue with the USB.

Hello. I have 100% same problem as the starter of this thread. When i boot the original Win8 installation DVD and try to do the refresh that doesn't effect my files, it says that my hard disk that the OS is installed on is locked. This is a huge issue, since i really don't want to lose all my files after the total reinstall.

    Hi Sam,

    1. Did you perform the upgrade from Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 Preview?
    2. Have you installed all the Windows Updates including the driver and firmware updates before installing Windows 8.1?
    3. What is the make and model of the computer?

The issue may occur due to any hardware compatibility.

If you are unable to login or boot to normal mode due to USB devices issue, you need to boot from the Windows 8 media and check if you can perform a System Restore.

If not , you need to perform a Refresh or Reset of the computer and check.

How to restore, refresh, or reset your PC

Note: Apps you installed from websites and DVDs will be removed. Apps that came with your PC and apps you installed from the Windows Store will be reinstalled. Windows puts a list of removed apps on your desktop after refreshing your PC. When you perform Refresh or Reset of the PC, there are chances of losing data.

HHope the information helps. Let us know if you need further assistance with Windows related issues. We will be happy to help.

I am screwed.  I have presentations tomorrow for business and I updated to 8.1.  The USB is not working.  No Microsoft Mouse (Comfort 500) and no Logitech Slide Changer etc.  What a mess once again.
