Samsung ATIV Smart PC 500T 8.1 Update

Currently, after the 8.1 update, Internet Explorer doesn't work, office is slow, the desktop is slow, and I have a whole host of other problems. Samsung says I need to pay $40 to reimage, but the only reason I updated was because it said this device is compatible at this web address: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en\_US/pdp/Samsung-ATIV-Smart-PC-500T-Tablet-White/productID.265664500.

Both Microsoft and Samsung refuse to refund the $40 charge that is necessary to make my computer work again, and I cannot access the recovery partition on my Samsung device. It is there, just not accessible. Anyone who has information on how to solve this issue, if you could give me an answer it would be greatly appreciated.

I started my own thread trying to get this resolved and sent an email to realtek.

I have researched the way drivers are handled a little bit and since this driver will work until its time to reboot, I have been disabling the device in device manager before shutting the tablet down, then after booting up I enable it again, this has allowed to to function but is a pain. But that being said drivers are handle in a couple of different ways, some are loaded as the system is initializing and some are as plug and play  (or loaded on demand) after the system is booted up. It seems to me that this driver can function as plug and play since that is what I am doing manually through device manager, if someone could write the configuration file for the driver to operate like that it might solve the issue.

Anyone know how to do that?

So to be clear: It is a driver configuration error, the driver for the realtek hardware is causing the system to hang during boot.

If your system is hanging, you must restart in safe mode, then go to device manager and disable to the realtek sound device. Then reboot in normal mode and again enable the sound device, thendo not shut down the tablet unless you disable the sound device first.

I keep the tablet in sleep mode when I am not using it, it will wake up fine, but if you shut it down without disabling you will have to do the safe mode thing again. Until they fix the driver this is the only way to have the tablet function with sound.

    Sorry to update this old thread just wanted to chime in my experience.

    Picked up this machine used to tinker around with. I was able to successfully get it to Windows 10 following your guide here.

    I had a few problems with updates, namely, Windows 8 updates, it ran all night updating like 147 updates, then failed, then it was able to succeed.  After uninstalling the sound drivers like you mentioned, it got it updated to Windows 10 pretty successfully.

    Something about the Windows 10 update must have changed because my machine only took a few hours, not nearly all night.  Once it's up and all the Windows store apps including the store itself updated the machine runs really nicely.

    I installed the audio drivers via the Samsung SW app and the sound works perfectly. No reboot hangs, or problems at all.

    Thanks to everyone who spent months troubleshooting this long before I ever owned the computer.

    I followed this approach and it worked. 

    1.  Uninstall the RealTek software listed in the programs list.   Reboot.   You will lose local sound. 
    2.  Upgrade to Windows 8.1 and download all important and optional updates.   I used the Customize settings option and turned off auto update of devices and drivers for this step. 

    After the updates,  you will see the Get Windows 10 icon in the system tray.  You can register for your copy and wait for Microsoft to push the installer to your device. 

    1.  If you want to install windows 10 right away,  use task manager to kill the Get Windows 10 app (gwx10.exe) and then download and run the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool from Microsoft's website.   Run the tool.  Choose "upgrade this computer" instead of creating media. 

    Note: this app is temperamental.   You may have to run it twice.  Also, after downloading and verifying the windows 10 install, if the upgrade does not auto start,  find the folder titled "ESD" (usually root of your main drive)  and run the setup file in that folder.

    1.  After windows 10 is installed (mine ran all night!), run the Samsung SW Update app.   Locate your tablet by serial number,  uncheck all downloads and check only the Sound driver for windows 8.1.  This will install the basic support for the Intel SST audio chipset on the motherboard.   

    That's it.    Several reboots later,  all is still well.

    I think I have found the solution for me, throw this tablet in the garbage and buy a Microsoft Surface. Sorry Samsung but your support is unacceptable. I am done spinning my wheels on a product and manufacturer that doesn't care enough about their customers to rewrite a simple sound driver to reorganize hardware boot priorities.
