Windows 8.1: System Image Backup of C: drive fails, Error 0x8078012D and 0x8007045D

Acronis True Image 2014 isn't even running on Windows.

I clearly stated ( see below )  I made a bootable USB.  I boot off the USB and the GUI in the USB is running on top of Linux...

I created two bootable USB thumb drives:

a. Acronis True Image 2014

b. Live Ubuntu

No where did I ever mention I installed Acronis on or in Windows...

Yes - sorry, I get that now.

I still would like for Microsoft own native OS system image backup routine to work,

without having to fiddle about with another OS and a 3rd party app!

(Doesn't look like they're in a rush to fix it though!! Every 2nd Tuesday of the month, I scan the Windows updates for some hint that they've fixed it ..... nothing so far)

Sorry you to took it that way.  I didn't mean for it to be offensive, derogatory or a "smart alec" response.

It's a workaround.

As for getting a fix, these forums at best provide workarounds, not fixes; unless what a user is doing and requesting is result of improper steps, procedures, misunderstanding or user error.

This issue is a bug, it affects and afflicts many individuals on different platforms running different OSs, over many years.  As DanlZme shared, not enough cases nor individuals are affected to raise level of attention nor necessity for resolution ( fix ) from Microsoft.

If you want to get a true fix, then you'll have to address and correspond with Microsoft directly.

What can anyone in this forum do to resolve a bug other than provide some alternative ( workaround ).

I know one can say it's the principle of the matter and that's a personal choice how much one wants to invest to prove a point.

I think many, if not most, on this thread are looking for a way to basically backup their systems using system image backup.  They came to this forum because they encountered the issue for which it was opened.

However, when system image backup cannot be fixed nor workaround related to system image backup provided, then alternatives are options.

My suggestion isn't an in your face "get a mac"...

My suggestion and " dd " solution will work on Pc as well as Mac as it's hardware and software independent.  And Acronis has a new version for Mac's also, so I suspect it can be cloned from a bootable USB too.

But to get to the point, I sincerely apologize if you thought and felt I was insulting or attacking you.  That was not my intentions.  Just sharing nothing else.

Out of curiosity.  Are you not backing up your system in the mean time with something else and confirming backup can be restored in some other manner until you can get system image backup to work?

Reason for asking, if you're not going to backup your system unless you can get system image backup to work, then you're exposing yourself fora  major diaster should your drive go down for any reason and cannot be recovered.

You come across as a very knowledgable person; however, with all due respect, if you're allowing your system to go unbacked up while you wait for someone to fix this, that's definitely not wise.

Number one object is to backup your system and confirm backup works ( can be restored ) regardless of means.

Second object is to get system image backup or whatever software one chooses to works.

If investment and expendentures are overly expensive or time consuming, then at some point one " should ", doesn't have to, but should consider other alternatives and options and move on...

a. There's been no help from Microsoft.

b. There's not going to be any help from Microsoft.

c. Even if MS decided to get involved, fix wouldn't come until much later, if ever.

So why attack those who are sharing and making effort to impart information to thread ( community )..

It's good you opened thread.  It's good place for others to share and express their experiences...

But this is a community and it's public and it's for everyone ( so long as we're all respectful ).

I've learned, I've grown and I've found an answer that meets my needs and I've moved on...

I've found solution that works on any PC, server, desktop, laptop on any OS running on PC...  Because you NEVER BOOT INTO THE PC, YOU BOOT OFF THE USB thumb drive...

I didn't read, except the first 3 pages... wow.  Page 14 now.

fwiw, I had a lot of problems with making my first system image on win8 with wbAdmin so I could make a schedule/task.

I had something on D drive that was considered system..  with one of the fancy links that I cant think of the name right now..   that caused an error.     Once I got rid of that link & that error went .. my next fight was like you... tried everything.

Finally,  making a folder on D drive named appropriate and turning on sharing on that folder, more or less making it the network share backup folder worked.   Think    Backup Operators   is proper permissions,  but I had given it   Everyone    as permissions originally.

The solution I described just works.  It works on any system, any hardware, any operating system.

With all due respect, that is not a solution or fix for the VSS service throwing an error,

it is an entirely different workaround using 3rd party tools and OS.

I started this thread to try and get a fix for this Microsoft error, to get smart alec replies about trying something else. You might as well say "use a Mac".
