As suggested by Microsoft, the failed security update MS14-045 requires actions to be take. You recommend manual uninstall of KB 2982791. This I did. The system reboots. I then went to try and use Windows Update so that it finds and installs the replacement, KB 2993651.
Windows Update is now corrupted. It issues error code 80246002. All attempts to run the Troubleshooter to fix it, says it is unable to automatically resolved the problem. It has entries with a red X in the list. When you ask for the detailed report, though, it shows no problems against any of the entries.
now; the first time I ran it, it showed an Error 1 accessing Windows\SoftwareDistribution, access denied.
It's unconscionable that MS should generate even more severe errors when trying to back out from an existing error from a failed update. And simply deleting one KB, now renders the entire Windows Update process unusable.

The download and installation of the System Update Readiness tool did not fully fix the problem on my Win7 64-bit system.
Although I was able to download and install KB2310138 (the Microsoft Security Essentials Definition Update), I continue to get the Code 80246002 error message when I attempt to check for updates. Note that I have deselected KB2993651 because of the known problems and don't plan to install it.

The solution is to use either OpenDNS or Google DNS Lookup Tables. They make sure their DNS Lookup Tables are updated with the latest URL to IP information ASAP/Immediately, the ISPs' DON"T!!!
MS simply changed their IP for the WU/MU servers in the midst of everything last week. Once your ISP updates their Lookup Table you could change back BUT I don't know WHY you would want to??? ISP DNS are usually very slow..... It's up to you. I have used OpenDNS for years, I will never go back to my ISPs' DNS!!!

I had the Windows Update Error also, used the Google DNS and no Window Update Error. So I switched back and had the same error this morning, went back to Google DNS again. I don't understand either why it works. Guess the most important thing is it works. I'm not waiting for Microsoft to fix it. This is a fix for now. I want to go on with my day and use the Internet. Rogers Cable is our ISP here in Eastern Canada. Never had Windows Update or Microsoft Update on XP when we had that computer.

It's a good idea to print this off if you can, in case you have to restart your computer. I intend to keep it nearby. As my husband and I have two Windows 7 computers.
I am by no means a whiz at computers, but I find that if something works, then it works. And that's the best part. Have been using Avg Free, which seems to cause no related problems with the Windows Update error that all have been talking about here.

I just completed installing KB 2993651 on my TEST partition after UNInstalling KB 2982791 but NOT KB 2975791 (the Rollup/Update 2).
I have not had any issues at all, NOW or before with the original Patch Tuesdays' offerings in their entirety.
I am in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, my ISP is Shaw Cable, but I only us OpenDNS (now in Vancouver as well I believe, they are spreading there love far and wide) I have had no DNS issues.

Do you now if the DNS issues are because of the BIG IRON Routers, at the various levels of the Internet, using old Cisco router's which have a limitation in the DNS Lookup table to 512 K entries? We saw a problem because of that earlier in the month due to a Verison mistake which was easily rolled back, THAT time. One notable site affected was "LastPass", but many more simple just disappeared.
