Win 7 Windows Update 80246002 Unable to run updates

As suggested by Microsoft, the failed security update MS14-045 requires actions to be take. You recommend manual uninstall of KB 2982791. This I did. The system reboots. I then went to try and use Windows Update so that it finds and installs the replacement, KB 2993651.

Windows Update is now corrupted. It issues error code 80246002. All attempts to run the Troubleshooter to fix it, says it is unable to automatically resolved the problem. It has entries with a red X in the list. When you ask for the detailed report, though, it shows no problems against any of the entries.

 now; the first time I ran it, it showed an Error 1 accessing Windows\SoftwareDistribution, access denied.

It's unconscionable that MS should generate even more severe errors when trying to back out from an existing error from a failed update. And simply deleting one KB, now renders the entire Windows Update process unusable.

    Not clear why it works, but it does.

    I changed the IPv4 properties (under the wireless network properties tab) to the referenced 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 values - these are the Google Public DNS settings.

    I had tried everything else, to no avail, including multiple System Restore, Microsoft auto fixes, HotFix, etc.  Using the Google Public DNS worked on an HP dv6, DELL 1520, and an HP G62 which all exhibited this problem - apparently caused in the last 2 weeks or so updates.

    This seems to be stable over the past 6 hours which included a few minor updates - but no more "error 80246002".

    Rastaquere is right. I did nothing and the problem is magically fixed.

    A: It is, but it's completely irrelevant to the question at hand.

    What's the full name & version of your currently-installed Norton application (e.g., NortonAntiVirus v20.x; Norton 360 21.x; Norton Internet Security 19.x)?

    Are you a Time Warner Cable subscriber by any chance? 

    Does running the following Command, followed by a reboot, resolve the problem?

    • ipconfig \flushdns
