I have just waded through all of those updates 1 at a time and if you un-install KB2917929 it will solve the problem. Believe it or not Microsoft call it a compatibility update!!!!
Adobe Acrobat on Windows 8.1
Installed adobe acrobat 7.0 pro on windows 8.1 machine. Everything seemed to install correctly but when I try launching the program i get a message:
Acrobat.exe - application error
The applicalication was unable to start correctly (0xc00000fd). Click OK to close the application.
Please help!

2014-12-03T01:57:39+00:00 Just to keep you guys updated, besides KB2917929, the update pointed out by tj_876, there's another update which causes the same problem: KB2919355.
Started getting this error and removing that update solved it. The other one had already been removed because it made CS2 apps not work. Definitely a lot better getting rid of this update than keeping your accounts desynchronized.

2014-11-20T20:48:37+00:00 Try ArrunG's solution. Make sure Windows 8.1 user login isn't connected to your Microsoft account. This solution worked for me.

2014-11-20T20:46:20+00:00 I couldn't find the updates to delete, so I kept looking for a different solution. ArrunG had the solution for me. I was installing Acrobat Pro 7 on a Windows 8.1 machine without any success. I disconnected my user from the Microsoft account that it automatically connects to when I logon and now Acrobat 7 works!!! YAY!!!
