Russian mnemonic keyboard three letters missing: щ ч э

It is nice that windows 8 added a mnemonic Russian keyboard.

Unfortunately there are three letters which I can not find: щ, ч and э.

These three letters exist in the standard Russian keyboard. They are at the following location (in the US  keyboard): o,x and '.

Without these three letters the mnemonic keyboard is useless

You just need to type multiple keys to get to those letters: For example some (not all) of them:

sh -> ш

ch -> ч

jo -> ё

je -> э

And this is just awesome. This means you just type the way it sounds and Russian letters just magically produced.

Chego eschjo xhelat'? -> Чего ещё желать?

Note that the left hand side is quite readable as is.

One not very obvious aspect is the way the combination "ые" is typed, by the way. You actually need to hit the spacebar after typing [English] 'y', so that the keyboard knows you are in fact typing 'ы' and not the first element of ’э', which is entered using the English key sequence 'ye'. By contrast, if you want to type 'ые’ (as in 'красивые') you need to type '[krasiv]y[spacebar]e.'

Was frustrating for me before I figured that one out...

    What is the combination for : щ ?

    I find it awkward to have to type 2 letters for one, and had hoped in vain that microsoft would change this in windows 8.1

    We need to ask Microsoft to fix the problem with missing Russian letters (Apple has them! See below):

    Those "combinations" are often frustrating, for example "vyuchil" or "rajon" - it's why during last 10-12 years Russian Phonetic (mnemonic) layout has each and every Russian letter, so there is no need for those troublesome "combinations"

    Such Phonetci layouts (with all Russian letters, no combinations):

    • suggested by http://AATSEEL.org
    • made by Russian-speaking people all over the world, from Australia to Germany, using MSKLC
    • Mac computers do have Russian Phonetic layout and it does have all the letters! -

    Such layouts work for Windows 8, too but in tedious way (Microsoft needs to fix that):

     - make layout under previous version of Windows (or use existing one made there)

     - install under Windows 8 - and it works!

    I am having the same problem (American who types in Russian daily for work). I notice, however, that on the Surface device, the ON-SCREEN keyboard is mapped correctly. If you are using a desktop PC, you can install the Microsoft keyboard remapping utility, called MSKLC (Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator), which will allow you to reconfigure any keyboard. I use this to customize my Cyrillic keyboard layout to suit my preferences.
