windows 8 does not support Prolific usb to serial driver

what is the solution ?

We want to use windows 8 but due to this driver problem, we are not buying windows 8

Figure out when the hardware device manufacturer will be providing you with drivers for the hardware you want to use under the OS you want to use.  If they are not - then there you go.

Wrong answer. These drivers worked flawlessly with Win7, and now they are broken in Win8. Probably some simple switch in the device driver layer, and perhaps it is, indeed, a bug actually in the driver that is now exposed in Win8...but in the meantime I am telling all my customers, who depend on their GPS's functioning, to downgrade to Win7. 

Regardless of where the bug actually is, it is a backwards compat issue that breaks the interfacing of many GPS;s to Windows.

    Ok I will throw a spanner in the works here.

    I use a magellan platinum GPS which has worked for many years (15 plus).

    Started using the GPs from win98 through to win7pro which worked perfectly.

    Then 2 weeks ago i purchased a 7 inch cheap windows 8.1 tablet and I installed the Gps mapping program to it and the USB to serial drivers that I used in windows 7 and it all worked perfectly.

    So i figured it works in win 8.1 so i went and bought a surface pro 3 tablet. Installed the DiscoverAus Street and track mapping software and all went well. Then installed the win 7 drivers i had for the serial / usb cable (USB 232 converter) 

    plugged in the usb to the pro 3 and went to start a mapping log and comes up with 

     'the drivers for this device are not installed (code28). There are no compatable drivers for this device. to find a driver click Update driver.

    when I try to "update drivers" nothing happens

    I have tried to download a few different 232 drivers (P9) but nothing seems to work.

    My point is, I know it can work, I have proved it, but with my surface pro 3  it wont.
