Why does dllhost.exe Com surrogate consumes memory untill crash.
It happens when I highlight or view a folder containing video files, Even if I close the folder or select a different folder the memory keeps getting consumed.
It seems to happen mostly with 3D Video files but it has done the same with 2D files.
So it seems to be a problem with the windows thumb nail system dealing with these files.
By the way trying to delete or move the file or folder while the Com Surrogate is consuming memory Delete can not complete the task.
What I have been doing is finding offending file selecting Delete, then go to task manager stopping Com Surrogate, then the file will delete.
Fix
"MS are aware of problems with certain chipset/driver combinations and the KB2670838 update
They are also aware of problems with the IE10 install
They are working on both issues, and will update as and when they are satisfied that they have solved the problems.
The recommendation in the meantime is that if the update doesn't install first time, make sure it's uninstalled, and then hide it - Windows Update will unhide it when it is updated."
So Uninstall IE10 and KB2670838 update, hide them from auto updating when thy pop back up to be updated the problem should be fixed.
Proof that MS knows that IE10 has problems on some hardware platforms is here.

il faut aller dans le panneau de configuration le gestionnaire de désinstallation des programme, vous afficher les mise à jour de Windows, vous recherchez le pack KB2670838 et vous cliquez dessus pour le désinstaller, le PC demandera l'arret et le redémarrage du PC (fermer vos processus avant de désinstaller) et tout remarche correctement.
This is a little off topic but here goes.
I am going to give you a look into what is installed on my PC and maybe give You some ideas to improve stability with your codec's, it may not but it could help with your problem.
Ok for starters stay away from codec packs they tend to break more things that they fix.
It is better to install only the Codec's that you need and try not to duplicate, Meaning for instance.
I use ffdshow as my main decoder/encoder.
There is no reason for me to install DIVX ffdshow can play divx files and just about any .mp4 and .avi file ever made.
If You like DIVX and have it installed You should not install ffdshow, xvid, or x264 codecs they will fight each other they pretty much all play the same type of files.
Although You can have more than one codec that plays a file type it is not recommended and can cause problems.
That is why I like ffdshow it covers a broad amount of compression types.
My second choice would be XVid but it is harder to setup for encoding.
Oh and by the way since these codecs I mention are GNU they are freeware not shareware and do a great job.
It can decode almost all .avi .mpg .mpeg .divx encoded with a variety of encoders.

ffdshow will be responsable for decoding mainly .avi .divx and .mp4 files as for .mpg .mpeg .wmv the system codec handles them just fine.
Then for Flash media types .FLV .asf I use Adobe flash, But no thumbs-common But the video plays fine.
For Quick Time files .MOV .QT I use QuickTime alternative codec no thumbs-common but files play fine.
For REAL media types .ra .ram I use Real alternative codec no thumbs-common but file plays fine.
This is where I get my open source codec's/decoders.
They have been around for quite a while 1996 I think any way haven't downloaded any crapware from them the codec's seem to be clean of mallware but I still scan right after download any way to be sure.
And that about covers most formats there are a few videos out there on the web that say I need a specific codec to view.
Normally these are sites just trying to make a buck off a sucker or sell an expensive tweaked version of a codec I already have.
Any site after installing Adobe flash and MS silverlight says that you need to download their codec is normally a scam.
As for a good alternate Video player VLC is one the other I use is KMPlayer the will play just about anything.
Just be careful while tweaking advanced settings in KMPlayer You can mess Up things with your codec's if you don't know what You are doing, sometimes its better to leave it alone untill You do some research and learn about it.
The downside of being a powerful Video player.
As for photos/pix/pictures I am a bit out of touch I only have the two main file types .jpg or .jpg and .Bmp
So no help there for You windows handles these types prety well.
KB976902 Was installed on 7-11-2012
The same date as My OS install.
No option to change or uninstall.
So I think at least for me it installed from the install disk or at least the same day as My format and install cant recall which.

Ok just did some checking KB976902 installs with Windows7 64Bit SP1 and cannot be removed.
If Your windows install disk has SP1 on it You have the same thing KB976902 cannot be removed.
Why are you trying to uninstall (KB976902 Windows updater SP1 patch) any ways?
I didn't install any updates from the fresh install of windows pro 64 bit, and I still had the problem on the machine I'm using now. I used the sysinternals autoruns to remove useless startup programs as well. This fixed the problem of viewing thumbnails of images.
Now, last night I performed a search of on one of my drives of all 2D .wmv files, and the problem returned. I have icons, but not thumbnails. I can open the performance monitor, look at the memory tab, and see a dllhost.exe process is growing like a monster on steroids. I tried to delete on one of the 2D .wmv files and my computer had to think about deleting this file for several minutes. While I had the performance monitor open, I ended the dllhost.exe process tree several times, till thumbnails began to appear, and the deletion was quick, once I ended the process tree of dllhost.exe several times. For now, I can keep playing whack-a-mole with dllhost.exe, by ending the process tree if I'm reviewing .wmv files.
*Problem isn't solved, my apologies to all.
While Windows 7 installs it will check for updates and put them in as it installs.
You should try installing Windows with no access to the internet then you can be sure that there are not updates installed.

I am hoping that You have enough time and patient's to try and do a new install without internet access.
Then you should have a clean install with only the service pack stated on your install disk.
Soon as you get to Your desktop for the first time turn off auto updates after that you can plug in your internet access and review and install the updates catching IE10 and KB2670838 before thy can install and block them till a fix is released.

The method you explain is exactly how I did this reload. I used a backup of my activation key to activate Windows as well. I was wanting to start with a fresh install, and forbid any unknown possible updates. I turned off all updating ability that I could and updated my hosts file blocking known update URLs. Still KB976902 jumped into my system without my knowledge. This is supposed to pave the way for other updates, but I don't want any updates for now, and cannot remove KB976902.
KB976902 Does not show up on installed updates list or it fails to uninstall?
Try to see if uninstalling is an option on your machine.
Control Panel>Programs and Features>Installed updates, click once on KB976902 (this will not uninstall it, but will show you whether the option to uninstall it is available) Please let me know what you see.

KB976902 Is not one of the updates we are focusing on.
The updates that the rest of us are having the problem with are IE10 and (KB2670838) not (KB976902) maybe You are looking at the wrong update or package.The update You are looking at KB976902 most likely come's on Your install disk and was implemented before Service pack1 (SP1) and is required to continue updating windows and should not have any thing to do with this current problem.My Windows install disk has (SP1) KB976902 is installed by default and I have had no problems untilIE10 and KB2670838 updates.(KB976902) is most likely not removable.
