I just can't figure out how to create desktop shortcuts for both Internet Explorer and Mail. It's awkward having to keep going to and fro from the Start Menu. Can anyone help please?

To create a desktop shortcut for any program, right-drag its exe
file to the desktop. Let go of the mouse button, and on the menu you
get, choose "Create shortcut here."

Bravo GregSB; many thanks for this. I was on the verge of asking my technical friend to wipe my new laptop clean and install windows 7. You've kept me in the windows 8 community, for now. The jury is still out though and, even though I've used pc and windows since UK launch (I worked for IBM at the time), my mac is still very much in use.

Neither is a comment with no details. Are you still using W8 or is this now about W10? Again, probably best to start your own thread with your own details. Or see my last suggestion in the last page of this thread (which apparently was made only a year and a half ago).

Not helpful. I had the same question - how to add a shortcut to the desktop. Have tried everyone's suggestion. Still not getting it.
