I just can't figure out how to create desktop shortcuts for both Internet Explorer and Mail. It's awkward having to keep going to and fro from the Start Menu. Can anyone help please?

To create a desktop shortcut for any program, right-drag its exe
file to the desktop. Let go of the mouse button, and on the menu you
get, choose "Create shortcut here."

Bravo GregSB; many thanks for this. I was on the verge of asking my technical friend to wipe my new laptop clean and install windows 7. You've kept me in the windows 8 community, for now. The jury is still out though and, even though I've used pc and windows since UK launch (I worked for IBM at the time), my mac is still very much in use.
If a person doesn't know how to create a shortcut, what makes you think they know where it's "exe" file is???
Also, why do MS people have to reinvent the wheel with every new version of software? You move programs in the menus, change the procedure for doing functions such as this for no discernable reason which only causes confusion and, no doubt, creates new bugs in your software. Have a little consideration for your users, for crying out loud!
